The article focuses on the statistics surrounding the practice of amputation in field hospitals (under which circumstances most patients survived, economics, etc.), but also presents a description of the procedure with more detail than I'd read before. A terribly nasty affair, and although the focus is typically on the patient and the survivors, one which makes me wonder if the surgeons performing the amputations dealt with what we would recognize today as post-traumatic stress?
