We held a B-17 mission at his year's Ellis-Con and due to the low turnout and miniature gaming interests, we had four fliers to tackle the mission of Schweinfurt.

Since we had only four crews, we threw the dice and they became the high squadron. Haskell's Howlers was the lead bomber and 2nd Patches was Tail-end Charlie.

Zone two had good fighter cover and Germans did not make an appearance. Zone three had poor fighter cover and some contact. Haskell's Howlers had a tail plane hit and light wound on the bombardier.Princess Meg, the second bomber in formation, missed all incoming fighters but they also missed the bomber.
Zone four had no-Germans detected. Zone 5 had 2nd Patches dealing with two angry FW-190's which killed his radio operator, the prop feathering controls, auto-pilot and port landing brakes.

In zone 8 the target zone of Schweinfurt, we saw Haskell's Howlers take 8 flak hits but was able to drop on-target with 30% accuracy. Princess Meg got through the flak but lost their tail guns but also dropped on-target with 75% accuracy. Nerdy Nancy got through and came on-target with 30% accuracy. 2nd Patches, however, took 11 flak hits wich his starboard fuel tank had a leak for 4 zones, a pilot compartment hit severely wounded the pilot and a hit damaged the port #2 engine causing it to runaway forcing the crew to bail. There was 8 parachutes visible with the KIA radio operator and the severely wounded pilot still in the stricken plane. All eight crewmen wre later captured and are POW's

On the return trip, Zone 8 and 7 were uneventful but in zone 6, Haskell's Howlers encountered a 6 o'clock low ME-110 whose shells hit the nose and pilot compartment setting fire to the o2 system and after an initial unsuccessful fire extinguisher, the fire was put out after the second try but the bomber was forced out of formation and below 10,000 feet causing multiple flak hits and additional fighters. In zone 4 he had hits from five different fighters which took out his starboard elevator, radio, ball turret guns, tail guns, bomb doors damaged, severely wounded his pilot. in zone three, his port elevator was shot out.

All three planes did land safely in England with the final results:

The overall bomb run was achieved 75% overall.
Six Me-109's were shot down and two ME-110's

Princess Meg took first with 19 points (1 fighter+8 for bomb accuracy of 75%+ 10 crewman safely home)

Nerdy Nancy was second with 16 points (3 fighter + 3 for bomb accuracy of 30% + 10 crewman)

Haskell's Howlers came in third with 14 points 2 fighter + 3 for accuracy of 30% + 9 crewmen safe.

2nd Patches was awarded a mini-B17 to replace the one he lost during the mission
