What a blast!
Many thanks to Aldie and ALL of the volunteers, the vendors, the
publishers, those who were willing to teach/play, and a great crowd!
2100 gamers IIRC!
After several years of missing the deadline/sold out
two friends and I went. Our first game convention and it could not
have been better!
Registration went fairly quickly once we found where the line started
~ 1 hour; our fault - we arrived a bit late.
Games! Deb and I played Ticket to Ride to get started. Then she
and my friend Marc told me to go look around in order to play new
games. They were correct!
Flashpoint:Fire Rescue 2nd Story! What a great co-op
game. There were 5 of us and the other 4 knew how to play the advanced rules.
The next day I looked for the game and found the publisher
in the vendor room. Sold! The next day Deb and I played the basic
game - we had to remember that it's Co-OP!
Deb found one game that stood out. It was Surviving Horror.
We played it with the designer Randy Navarro who is one of the
best teachers/explainers I've had the pleasure to play. It was
my favorite game of the Con; Think old first person shooter,
the only thing missing are the sound effects. The Survivors cards
and the reset feature worked very well (Deb won the game handily!)
Aeroplanes: The guy teaching was great! He had one of the players
wanted flags at 2, I asked to join, grabbed a friend and another joined
within just a few minutes. Area control with great mechanics and a great
"theme"; early air transport. I was a bit bleary eyed and tired after
4 hours of sleep the previous night, the last player to join won
after playing a smart game! I was happily last.
Pitch Car: FUN! It was a hoot! The track was set up with ramps
and a drop-off. Watched a bit and started racing after a practice
lap. What a sleeper of of a game! First race 2nd place, next 7th!
The door prizes were nothing like I'd seen before...no ticket
call; just hand it over and pick 4! games from the A B C D rack!
New toys to play!
p.s. Thanks to all that I met and to those that invited/allowed
us to play. Next Year!
YAY, a chance to play games during the DAY!! (I am cursed with morning person genes)
I tweet about board gaming at @BGGgirl, about writing/illustrating at @inkyelbows.
So glad you enjoyed your first BGG.con!
Surviving Horror sounds intriguing but are you sure that's the name of the game? I looked for it on BGG but couldn't find any games by that name. Or was it a prototype?
Debbie (who loves horror-themed games)
It was a prototype.
