Did this originate from Europe? And what about the playing style, more euro or American?

Far more euro. Sure, there is some dice rolling, but if you don't balance your economy, you're going to lose. I love it!

It's a 4X game developed in Finland. That tells you 10,000% more information than arbitrarily labeling it Ameritrash or Euro.

It's a hybrid for me. In all honesty the label on what game type it is does not matter so much, as whatever it is it is a good game!

The correct term is 'Suomitrash'. Hope that helps.

It has elements of both.

But it's awesome how people constantly get in arguments over classifying this game. Tying everything to a specific genre is super important, and if you disagree with me you are a fundamentally bad person.

Too bad Wareuro fell out of currency--or wait, I guess it sounds pretty stupid.

Eclipse is a tightly designed game of building economic engines folded into a story about galactic civilization. Players may interact on several levels, including direct conflict. That should tell you more than any broad genre description.

Instead of a label, these are the skills you need to do well:

Efficiently manage your economy generating resources and being able to convert those resources into VP.

Be a darn good General that knows how to accomplish military objectives using as few resources as needed. This includes knowing which fights to get into and which to avoid.

Be a darn good diplomat who can talk their way out of a tight spot, build coalitions, and generally guide the groupthink of the table to your own ends.

Be a master Strategic thinker who takes all of the above, can estimate likely game conditions many turns in advance, and combines it all into a winning plan.

This is why I love it so much!

Some games are actually starting to merge features from both styles.
I think this is going to be a tendency, and it will become difficult to separate games into Euros or Ameritrashs eventually.

Played Eclipse for the first time last night. I gotta say this feels more like a euro from all the resource managing.

Its the perfect blend of the two. But if pressed I would have to say it is closer to Euro than Thematic. The economic elements and resource management make it more of Euro. Folks who love thematic games and think they need to bash heads often get trounced in this game.
