Big News From Mars? Rover Scientists Mum For Now
http://www.npr.org/2012/11/20/165513016/big-news-from-mars-r...

SAM is a kind of miniature chemistry lab. Put a sample of Martian soil or rock or even air inside SAM, and it will tell you what the sample's made of.

Grotzinger says they recently put a soil sample in SAM, and the analysis shows something Earth-shaking. "This data is gonna be one for the history books...".

...Grotzinger says it will take several few weeks before he and his team are ready to talk about their latest finding.

NPR, you are such a tease.

So, what could they have found?

Yeah, but that's what Donald Trump said too.

Does SAM do isotope testing?
If so I'm guessing that isotope ratios consistent with life (though perhaps ancient - though how far back can atmospheric isotopes go - hmm C14? If so Wowsers) on Mars.

That would be a huge discovery. Even if it's ancient, Mars having supported life at some point in the distant past would be an amazing discovery about the history of our solar system and/or about life itself.

Either that, or organic compounds.

Oi! That's not really Wally on Mars - I can see fingers in the top right corner of the frame.

It's beginning to look like those fake moon-landings all over again.

First the face then the pyramid and now THINGY - just how much evidence will it take till the so-called experts admit that Mars is covered with the artifacts and monuments of at least 3 civilizations?

If it's anything like their last announcement, it'll be misinterpreted data. Though our lab has a list of our guesses, assuming it's actually something.

Edit: Also, why is this in RSP?

Some scientific discoveries can be problematic for certain dogmatic religions too inflexible enough to modify their creation story when new information is discovered. Since those discussions can evolve from an OP like this, it's safest to start here in RSP. It's not like it's board game related and who want's to know what Chit-Chat people think about it?

EDIT: Though I have to say, and I contributed as much, it has gone down a Chit-Chat like path so far.

While I have nothing but optimism to base this belief on, I think we're going to find that life, especially very simple bacteria, are prevalent throughout the universe. We've already discovered that life extends to just about every square inch of our planet and in the most hostile environments imaginable. Why not Mars or Venus or swirling about in the storms of Jupiter.
