Rules allow you to "hold open a door" on your turn for other players. When would you ever do this, except to let another player through the door to kill the current leader? Is there ever a really practical reason that you'd hold the door?

Go through the door, turn and shoot through the door, close the door.

For another player...? Yeah, to shoot at the leader.

If you know that another player is in a better position to prevent the leading player then you might want to hold the door open for them. But that still essentially falls into the "to damage the leading player category". I have also seen someone hold open a door so that when they forced another player to move they could make them move through that door which eventually put them further away from where they wanted to be.

I just read the rules and don't get how you keep a door opened.

Also If I am in my own sector can I cast a spell lets say 2 squares away from the door and count it as open? or do I have to be standing right next to it?

You need to be right next to the door to hold it open. Adjacent to it and not diagonally.
