I was perusing the FFG holiday sale and noticed that all 3 Android novels are $3 each (although the Kindle editions on amazon are also dirt cheap), and the original Android game that started this whole universe is $25 (more than 50% off MSRP).

If you want to know more about:

SEA, NBN, Weyland, Floyd, Melange Mining Corp, and *especially the beanstalk*, read Freefall.

Mirrormorph, and *especially Haas*, read Golem.

Noise, private security forces, and *especially Caprice Nisei and Jinteki*, read Strange flesh.

Noise, Caprice Nisei, Floyd, Haas, Jinteki, beanstalk, NBN, Wyldside, as well as where everything is located on the map, get the original Android game. (I also love the game itself, but it's *substantially* more complicated and longer than Netrunner, and very different from it.)

PS a small factoid: As Kevin Wilson (the designer of Android) points out in his design notes in the rulebook, one of the major inspirations for the Android universe was NASA. That's probably why I'm so enamored with it. I also think that while the Android universe (and the Netrunner game especially) is decidedly cyberpunk, it has very little in common with, and a *very* different flavor from classic cyberpunk such as Neuromancer and Count Zero (which I also enjoy), but that's another story.

Very little in common with Neuromancer?
How do you get to this?
As far as i can see, Android Universe is as close as it gets to Neuromancer/Gibson Universe...

The Android Universe is much more like a combination of Bladerunner and Asimov's "I, Robot" than Neuromancer. But still far from all of the above.

1. The primary focus of the Android universe is Androids (bioroids and clones). The politics, conflicts, economy, etc. are rooted in something having to do with Androids. These are almost completely absent in Neuromancer. The focus of classic cyberpunk is on cyberspace and androids are either completely absent or incidental.

2. A secondary focus of the Android universe is the beanstalk (space elevator). Again, a lot of the politics, conflicts, and the economy have something to do with the beanstalk. Again, absent or incidental in classic cyberpunk.

3. While certainly dystopian, the Android universe "depicts a hopeful future" (Kevin Wilson's words). Protagonists in this universe tend to be of the hero type. Classic cyberpunk is typically purely dystopian and protagonists are anti-heros.

While the Netrunner game itself does focus on cyberspace, a lot of the cards (I want to say at least half of non-ice or icebreaker cards) have to do with #1 and #2, and strongly evoke the Android universe, with its own very different feel from classic cyberpunk (especially in the sense 3) at least in my mind.

Everything "Gibsonian" in Android:Netrunner comes from the legacy of the original game, which is based on the RPG system Cyberpunk 2020, which in turn draws heavily from Neuromancer. When I read Strange Flesh I was surprised how little it had to do with traditional cyberpunk. It is closer to Neal Stephenson's The Golden Age than The Sprawl Trilogy.

I love how the Android universe is similar but different to typical cyberpunk. Infiltration and Netrunner have the more traditional anti-hero characters though. I can't wait to see how they expand the universe next, a PnP RPG perhaps?

Sorry, only know the Boardgame not the Novels.

In the Boardgame most Charakters are the "Antihero" Type, highlighted by the twilight mechanik.

Ok, there are no Androids in the Neuromancer Universe... but i don´t think its to far off. You could put them in somwhere there^^

At least there is something like the Beanstalk in the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG that was mostly based on Neuromancer and other Gibson work...

But seems like i should read the Novels

Game of Thrones series include some antiheroes too, but probably they are not really cyberpunk.
