I have recently seen what looks like a game in a friend's house and they don't know what it is - neither do I and I'm wanting to find out!

In this case the game has been made from slate, but i guess any materials would be OK. I'm interested in making a similar one from hardwood in my workshop.

There is a square board with 8 circles (places) marked and arranged in a circle. The 8 pieces have two sets of four identical pieces, and initially they stand on the marked circles on the base. Then what ... ?

Alternatively this might just be an interesting piece of "artwork" used purely for decoration. The slate set looks rather like a prehistoric stone circle wiht magaliths!

I'd be very pleased if anyone has any ideas about this.

Many thanks

Mancala could be a possibility, but that's usually a pile of undifferentiated pieces with ownership covered by the side of the board they're on.

I scrolled through abstract games, and while I don't think Diam is the right game, it might be possible to play it with this set.

A picture or two would be really helpful.

Liam, that may be clear to you, but I have no clue how to upload with this. I fear the OP may be in the same way. Got some instructions? I need them even if the OP doesn't.

There is now a photo in my Gallery - hope it helps you identify the game. There is also an empty "place" in the centre of the circle of 8 places.

Looks more like a piece of art than a game. Are you sure it's a game? Where did the owners obtain it from?

It might be useful to ask on the abstract games forum.

It's certainly a beautiful thing!

After reading up on Mu Torere, I agree with Mr. Sanders. If this wasn't made for Mu Torere, then it is the game that fits best with the board and pieces.

Mu Torere does seem to fit exactly. THANK YOU to all who helped track it down. I've made a copy with wood - it looks great. Now I need to work out the strategy to win everytime???

Thank you again - what a wonderful place the internet is!
