Im sure some threads are out there for this subject. Im kinda new to the forum though and would appreciate any help you have regarding this.
We played the base game now a couple of times and would like to expand it with something. What would you recommend me to get first?

If you're looking for a board expansion, I'd go with Dunwich Horror. If you're looking for just cards/mechanics, King In Yellow is a good first choice.

I second the Dunwich Horror, IMO it really reinvigorates the base game, making it feel new again.

Second Dunwhich Horror and King In Yellow expansions. As to which one to purchase first, it depends on what you are looking for. Dunwich is a big box expansion which has a small board, more investigators, more Ancient Ones, some cards and adds other mechanics like gate bursts and injury cards. The injury cards are a good mechanic.

KIY is a small box expansion which adds more common and unique items, spells, and Mythos and other cards. Also adds a new mechanic - Blight cards. I like the Blight cards and the Herald variant for KIY is also very good.

Dunwich or Lurker will serve you best as first expansions. Either one is a fine start.

Just buy them all at once, you'll end up them eventually anyways.

But yes, Dunwich and KiY are great. Kingsport is good too, the epic battle stuff is really nice to have.

I prefer Dunwich and The Lurker at the Threshold.
Because of the relationship, injury, madness cards and the new gates.

I recently bought my first expansion -- and went for the Curse of the Dark Pharoah. And loved it. It added some fun new challenges without changing alot of the gameplay yet - which was nice. It has a great theme to it and really spiced up my games

I like Lurker at the Threshold, but it makes the game too easy. You really need Miskatonic Horror for the Lurker to be a real threat.

Dunwich is a terrific first expansion for many reasons, but particularly for the Injury and Madness cards.

The I&M cards decrease player down time, and are just more entertaining than the base game knock out rules. They are the only components of any expansion I consider indispensable.

In addition, Dunwich has new Investigators, new Great Old Ones, more spells, more items. It not only gives you a new board with three new neighborhoods and two other Worlds, it doubles the size of your base game Arkham Encounter decks.

New Mythos cards include some with the "Gate Burst" mechanic, which ups the difficulty.

Dunwich.

Then everything else.

Second this.

And I say start in order...even if it is a recently revised edition...CotDP gets you started nicely plus if you want to try any fan created content there are several things linked to it.

But yes, buy them all...you'll end up constructing your own favorite version

My favorite boardgame ever because of this modular nature (and for staying on target thematically - I love when new players ask why they keep dying .

Best fit between a boardgame and an rpg as well.

I don't know if the reason you do this is because of the repetitious nature of the question but I think it's cool. You don't just say 'buy this one', you point to all kinds of opinions and that, I think, is a good thing.

Do you update or have a criteria for picking which topics get chosen for the list?

(And no, I'm not trying to make a joke here)

It was when someone asked it for like the third time in a week, so I gathered up all the previous related threads. I don't add any new ones because there isn't really anything new to say.

But for what it's worth:

Big box: Dunwich
Little box: King in Yellow or Lurker

Order to get big boxes:
Dunwich, Kingsport, Innsmouth, Miskatonic

Do not get as first expansion:
Innsmouth, Miskatonic

My standard answer, taken from the FFG boards...

****

Good god, I wish we could sticky this question. Anyway, Dunwich Horror is the best big box set. Kingsport is easiest and Innsmouth is hardest. You'll probably want either Dunwich or Innsmouth to start with as they give you extra locations for gates to open at. don't get Miskatonic Horror until you have at least 4 other official expansions

Small box expansion is trickier: Curse of the Dark Pharaoh gives you a new class of cards (Exhibit cards), King in Yellow is probably most balanced in terms of theme, Black Goat of the Woods for extra monsters (but the cult itself is rubbish) or Lurker at the Threshold for extra gates. My preference is CotDP, but you can make a decent argument for all of them.

More significantly, if you're tight on funds, grab some of the custom material out there! Here is a small list you should seriously consider downloading:

Simple Additions

These links require no extra material to play. You can download them, print them out and you're ready to go.

FFG Free Material: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/71859/promotional-anci...

16 Custom Investigators: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/50107/16-custom-investigat...

Nyarlathotep Heralds: http://s622.photobucket.com/albums/tt307/avi_dreader/Additio...

Large Expansions

These expansions are "big box" expansions. They're probably the best bang for your buck, containing new boards, new cards and new challenges. Whilst that sounds like a lot of work remember that Arkham is modular so you can often include some cards and disregard others. For instructions on how to manufacture the boards, read this excellent article: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/832608/constructing-cust...

Lovecraft Country Horror: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/65090/lovecraft-countr...

Vermont Horror: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/127198/vermo...

Arkham Nightmare: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/796568/arkham-nightmare-...

Board Expansions with Scenarios

These expansion include a new board for use with a specific scenario. As such the replay value may be impacted, but they may be worth downloading nonetheless.

The Haunted House: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/47628/haunted-house

The Masks of Nyarlathotep: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/821899/masks-of-nyarlath...

Koth of Hyboria: http://plaidscape.net/downloads/arkham/Spanish2/Sc6Images.zi...

Expansion Specific Material

These expansions preusme that you own at least one other expansion, either Curse of the Dark Pharaoh (for the first two) or Innsmouth Horror (for the last one.

The Gilman Memorial Exhibit: http://cgjennings.ca/eons/samples/gilman.html

Curse of the Gold Scarab: http://megaupload.com/?d=W0LT60Z0
