I found the dice cup in the 2008 edition smelled more like monkey ass, while the 2011 cup has a smell more akin to a puke/gasoline swill.

That's of little help. What kind of monkey and what grade gasoline?

I have what I believe is the 2008 version and the most significant difference I can see is the physical size of the box. Compared to the newer editions I commonly see now, my box is much shallower (i.e Thurn and Taxis and Vikings). The newer printings seem to be at least an inch or more deeper (i.e. Pantheon). I would advise to go with the newer printings though, because the shallower box in the 2008 version prevents the lid from sitting flush without removing the insert.
