Meet Luo Laogren, a duck farmer in the Zhejiang province who lives close to the city of Wenling.

Mr. Luo refused to take what he felt was an incredibly low offer of 220,000 Yuan from the government. He had just recently finished his house, at a cost to him of 600,000 Yuan. The government has since upped their bid to 260,000 Yuan.

"Home amid Chinese highway a symbol of resistance.", by Didi Tang. AP Newswire, 11.23.12

http://news.yahoo.com/home-amid-chinese-highway-symbol-resis...

Afraid that the government might demolish his house anyway, Mr. Luo and his wife sleep in separate rooms of their house. So far, their utilities have not been disconnected.

The odds aren't with Mr. Luo and his act of defiance, however. Provincial governments notoriously play hardball in these cases, and will try to hammer down on this 'nail house' of resistance.

My heart goes out to him, however, and I hope he gets a fair settlement from the government. The Don Quixote in me hopes that he wins his spurs.

This is not a uniquely Chinese problem. Eminent domain issues do often pop up in the States as well and property owners normally get "fair market value" which may be much less than what they paid or invested.

Having lived in China, I'm surprised his house has lasted this long. He should be grateful for the media attention which is probably the only thing keeping the house standing...and even that will likely wear off.

We have a MILLION more protections here in the U.S. than they do in China. The corruption and disregard of rights we take for granted is really sad.

Can we presume that duck farmers are anti-Buddhism?

Do they engage in word-play before deciding their career?

I am very impressed with the size of that guy's house.
I'm thinking he is not just "a duck farmer". He has relatives in City Hall. And his house is still standing in the middle of a freeway. I'm thinking he owns a sizable business and may be part of a locally powerful grouping.

All my hero's are flawed.

That's why I admire them so much.

Flawed hero's are so much more interesting.

You're probably right, Sr. Vanilla. That house is worth about 96,000 in US currency, which is a fair dinkum amount of money for even the US, much less China.

All my heroes know how to make a plural out of "hero." And they are all cowboys, but that's irrelevant.

It's so lovely to see young people listening to antique music.
Here is some more.

It's just like what my uncle used to listen to back when I was a wee laddie.

In most cases that is true, but in looking into this particular matter, I just found out that China got rid of "eminent domain" a few years ago, whereas its still applicable in the US.

Quiz (No marks available. Sorry.)

What is the population of the province that Mr Luo lives in?

A bonus question for the Kniziod amonst us:
How does this province relate to the Qin state?

And for the Bang! style game lovers :
The Three Kingdoms?

I don't know where you read that but millions get shoved out of their homes often with little or no compensation constantly. All in the name of modernization.
