I'm a big fan of Age of Steam and was considering backing the RotW expansion on Kickstarter and buying other expansion maps. Can these be used seamlessly with Age of Steam?

Simple answer, no. The hex-tile sizes are completely different.

While Age of Steam & Steam are inter-compatible have the same size hexagons, Railways of the World has significantly smaller hexagons making it non-compatible.

Of course AoS and Steam have the same hex size, but are still not generally compatible beyond that.

You'll not AoS maps are smaller, too. The games are so different, no map would be balanced. Look for Bezier maps and old reprints for your expansions.

All Most of the expansions released by Bézier Games are compatible with both Age of Steam and Steam, and it would only take some house rules for other maps to be inter-compatible as well.

The hexes fit, the maps play nothing alike and any map which uses subtle production tweaks to generate incentives is dead in the water.
