Am I understanding this correctly?
You can only assign 3 Gruppen to a Minor raid. If you select two bombers and a fighter the fighter must be placed in the Channel Patrol box so that means the bombers go in unprotected.
The fighter assigned to the Channel Patrol has to come from the three Gruppen assigned to the Minor raid?
Is this correct? If so, why would you ever conduct a Minor raid?

But you only must do it if you select Bf109 Gruppe and the target is beyond Bf109 range (5.31).

I don't think your answer applies.
Please see 6.1 where it states "If two or more bomber Gruppen are in the bomber box, place Me109 Gruppen in the Channel Patrol box as required by the Channel Patrol Chart."
So if conducting a Minor Raid anywhere with two Bomber Gruppen and one Me109 Gruppen it seems that the Me109 HAS to be placed in the Channel Patrol box leaving the bombers unprotected.
It therefore appears that if you want to conduct a Minor Raid and have Me109 protection for the bombers you will have to construct your raid with one Bomber Gruppen and two Me109 Gruppen.
Right?

Well, it seems you're right, sorry.

So in case you want to conduct a Minor Raid of two Bomber Gruppen protected by close escort, you must assign a Bf110 Gruppe to escort duty.

Yes, that's the way I read the rule. So what's the reasoning behind ever conducting a Minor raid? I must be missing something.

Minor raid may force RAF squadrons to react and will weaken their resistance during your upcoming raids.

Save them for the end of a string of major raids when most of the squadrons are unavailable. Can usually give you a free run.

Or use One bomber gruppen along with Me110 for bombing. In that case one Me109 can Hunt and protect bombing groups.
