The Black Friday deal has really piqued my interest in this title. Well actually the video reviews/overviews did after I became aware of the game due to the deal.

For those that own or have played it with the expansion, would you recommend picking both up at the same time? Trying to figure out if the extra ding to the wallet is worth it.

Be sure to taste your words, before you spit them out.

Absolutely! If you like the era, it's a no brainer IMO.

I had almost managed to get through the Black Friday weekend without a single purchase online or otherwise. Wallet dinged. Thanks for the recommendation gentleman ... I think. laugh

Actually, this will be my first foray into this era. As I read some of the session reports I realized that I'm woefully deficient in regards to the history of these time periods ... especially so in regards to the French & Indian War. As a first order of business I'll hit Wikipedia for an overview.

It's worth it. Also the book will give you a good overview of the F&I period.

That's good to know. I'm very appreciative of games that include historical information and/or designer notes that cite works that inspired the title. It's exposed me to a number of different books or movies that I'd probably not have experienced otherwise. For example, I've read books and watched a number of documentaries on scaling K2, watched Dr. Strangelove, started in on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and just today picked up an e-book copy of Daniel Defoe's A General History of the Pyrates to accompany my "new" copy of Blackbeard.
