I've been living in a regional Australian area for about four years, and during this time have struggled to find wargaming opponents (I've found a few, but their interest waxes and wanes).

On the way to work this morning I saw four signs directing travelers to the 'ASL Congress'. For a nanosecond my brain went 'Whaaaaaaaaaat!!! There's been an ASL group living in this area quietly for all this time and now they're hosting a national congress inviting ASL players from all over the country!!!??? ... and they didn't invite me!!!'

Then, of course, reality snapped in and I figured ASL must be an acronym something else.

But then, I got to work and EVERYONE is playing ASL!!! No, not really, that was a joke, the offices are all still empty as I write this.

It turns out it's the Australian Society for Limnology Congress.

What is Limnology you ask? It's the study of wargames!!! No, not really, that was also a joke. Limnology is apparently the study of rivers (ie: actual rivers in our environment, not the effect of rivers on the Movement Points of a German Rifle Squad).

Ah well, I guess all I can do now is take the starter kit down and see how many of the scientists I can convert...

This Memorial Day weekend, do not thank a veteran. Say a prayer of thanks for those in our military who gave their last full measure of devotion, and all their tomorrows, so that we could enjoy today and all OUR tomorrows.

I wasn't buying the "everyone at work plays ASL" bit. But an ASL Congress sounds pretty good.

ASL also stands for "Advanced Squad Leader", which is some sort of geeky video game or something like that.

Perhaps you should put up a few 'ASL Congress' signs and see if any of the right people turn up.

I met an actual limnologist in October. He taught me how to electrofish. I do wish I'd had the presence of mind to ask him if he had the new Action Pack. Who knew?

But I thought Aussies had no Congress. Shouldn't that have been ASP?

Ooops, now this thread will be moved to RSP (Royal Society of Parliament)
