I really thought you couldn't put smoke into a stream. In Journal 10 the beginners article had smoke being thrown by infantry into and Effluent hex. I looked and couldn't find a reason why not. Have I misunderstood this all these years?

Stream isn't a Water obstacle, unless flooded, in which case it is treated as a pond.

Quote:
B21.1 ... Any non-stream hex whose center dot is emplaced in a blue background is a Water Obstacle hex.

and

Quote:
B20.44 Flooded: If a stream is flooded, it is one level higher than it would normally be (i.e., usually level 0), and is treated as a flooded pond. All mapboard-depicted ponds in a scenario that has a flooded stream are also one level higher than normal, as per 21.21. See 16.6 for a flooded stream's effect on marsh.

Yes. You can place (and fire) SMOKE into a stream hex.

A24.1...A squad may not place SMOKE in Water Obstacles [EXC: Bridges (not foot bridges)], sewer, or marsh hexes (and neither may ordnance).

B21.1 A Water Obstacle is a body of water large enough to stop the normal movement of men and vehicles, which cannot enter without special assistance. Any non-stream hex whose center dot is emplaced in a blue background is a Water Obstacle hex.

8.52 SMOKE ammunition is always placed at ground level in any target hex which is hit on the Area Target Type, except Interior Building hexes, even if the only visible part of that hex is the upper level of a building. A Gun cannot place SMOKE in its own hex, although some AFV may place smoke in their own hex without their Gun (D13).

Emphasis added. I would assume that this means that SMOKE fired into a Woods-Stream hex would be placed IN the stream and hence only rise to Level 1, rather than Level 2 (EXC: WP would rise to Level 3).

Thanks guys, unless someone chimes in with a different opinion it seems I have had the wrong idea in my head about streams.

Also, SMOKE can drift over these hexes right? Impassable water hexes since the SMOKE counter isn't in the water obstacle but rather the "dispersed Smoke" counter.

Am I not right?

Yes you can drift smoke onto the water but you cannot place it on there.

Hmmm... I've heard that they're much much better live than dead.

But did Vic see them live in Montreux?

I don't know where he saw them, I do know when though. It was in the 1960's.
