I've just picked up a copy of this game - just looking at the contents of the box makes me very happy - lovely production despite the dodgy cover.

Though just starting on the rules and happy to play 'out of the box', I'm aware that the series has developed since this game. Are there any later rules which I should (and can) incorporate into the game?

Ta.

Which edition do you have. Believe there are some rule differences from the get-go, before we move to address your question.

If he's taking about the dodgy cover that can only mean he has the AH mounted map version, circa 1983. He should try to get ahold of OSG 1998 version, or at least the unified rules available at the OSG website.

It's the 1983 version - nice mounted map and the blue cover with a terrible picture (sorry artist).
