So, it appears that Syria effectively dropped all internet connection sometime today. Anyone think this is some major glitch, or is something big about to happen? I shudder to think what is going on right now, without anybody being able to expose it, in a timely fashion, to the world.

Oh how did we ever live before the internet. I'm sure there's some reporter with their mobile wireless hotspot who will be able to report whatever happens.

If Syria is smart, the reporters will have to use sat phones.

Honestly, my point wasn't "how do we live without internet," but I'm sure you knew that already.

It's more to do with what a runaway government will do to the people who were using the Internet to disseminate truth to the world, while said connections are shut off.

Hmm, interesting.

I doubt we need to the internet to continue to get news stories from the area. People will figure out work arounds quickly in either case.

If you could touch the alien sand and hear the cries of strange birds and watch them wheel in another sky, would that satisfy you?

It's not just news coming in and out of the country. No internet means that any coordinated response to happenings inside the country may be seriously impaired. (Remember the impact of Twitter on Arab Spring.)

49xjohn does have a point, over 37,000 people have allegedly died in Syria so far this year and people only want to talk seriously about Gaza. Syria is almost a throwback to cold war times with Russians feeding Assad weapons and the west feeding the rebels aid. That's not even touching the surface of the literally hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing or have fled to neighboring countries.

What exactly can be done by outside forces?
