I know this would be more clear having the actual game in front of me, but what is considered a hit? Judging by the item list, I'm assuming the dice aren't regular d6 for combat. What are they?

The rulebook reference "1 six sided die" and "10 battle dice"... In the new preview here
http://www.plaidhatgames.com/news/166
we learn that we roll the six sided die to determine results after defeating a Yugai control unit and other such activities... such as the Gambler power from this preview:

As far as the battle dice, you can see them in the rulebook on page 17... it looks to me like their value ranges from 0-3, although I can't tell the distribution from the image.

Distribution is one zero result, two each one and two results, one three result.
