I just got this game and I am loving it so far. However, I can definitely see how a squad builder app would be very useful in building squads (especially when playing with my wife and others). I've discovered BattleScribe Mobile and the associated data file and while it does the job, I find it very lacking in some ways. My biggest gripe is that there is no way to remove the ads (personal preference). Secondly, it would be great if it showed you the stats/text of the cards while building the squad instead of just their names. And finally, it allows you to break squad building rules (i.e. have 2 of unique cards), which while not a big deal, would help when playing against inexperienced (or oblivious) players.

Does any one know of another app our there that might fit my needs better? If not, does any one else think a different app would fit them better as well? The reason I ask is that I am an iOS developer and I could try to build an app that better suited myself (and hopefully others) if the need exists.

I would pick up a decent iOS app for it. Great idea.

I've seen these sites as well and I agree they are great for a browser, but not a mobile device. My ideal app would work great on both the iPhone and iPad.

The site is great, but we had to remove the cards from those builders. If you want cards to here:

HMTL Based Squad Builder

Unless FFG releases an app (which I doubt they would do), you won't see an app get approved by Apple because of copyright infringements. Even if one makes it past their censors, it won't be long before FFG's lawyers send out a C&D to pull it.

I agree, there is no way I would put images of the cards in the app, at best there would just be description text.

Yeah I would make one of these in a heartbeat if there was any way to make it really good without running afoul of FFG's rights. I don't see it happening though.

Hence the reason I didn't build an app either... I went with the HTML route, does everything you need without running afoul of their lawyers.

Any app would have to be careful not to infringe on FFG's or Lucasfilm's copyright, but there are ways around that (such as what BattleScribe did with their external data file).

The reason I posted wasn't to argue whether an app was possible, but just to see if anyone else thought a more mobile-friendly solution would be useful. My ideal app would be something anyone could easily use on a phone or tablet, not just those hardcore players who want to get the most possible out of their 100 points (for those, the spreadsheet is clearly better). I want something that can be passed around during a game night that allows those not playing to build their squad for the next round. Something that alleviates the need for a pen/paper or calculator at the game table.

You can downlad BattleScribe and use https://dl.dropbox.com/u/108106866/Battlescribe%20Data/index... as data. Think it works ok but i use the url posted in this thread instead.

Ahem...

http://x-wing.voidstate.com/build

(It's still not quite finished but is mostly there. And apparently works OK on iPads. Any feedback is very welcome on this thread: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/893096/voidstates-x-wing-squ...)

I tried this out, and it works pretty well. Not all the ships are up (no A-wings) and it would be nice to see description for pilot and upgrade cards while you choose then, but other than that it works pretty well.

Definitely a worthy endeavour.

It would be limited, though. They would probably not allow too much in the way of rules being accessible in the app ...

Be sure to post up if you decide to head the iOS route.
