We have played a session recently, 4 players, no modules, just the base game. Overall we had great fun, but there is something which struck most of us - the game seems to be a bit easier for the Spring side mechanically.

The reason is simple - quests for both sides are placed in Locations, and while the Fairy Tales start the game in Locations too, the Soldiers start in Squares. This means that very often a Fairy Tale does not need to move to join a quest (or needs to move through an even number of spaces), while a Soldier needs to move at least one space (or 3, or 5). This in turn means that most of the time, Soldiers need to discard one card more to join a quest, even a Winter side quest.

After several quests this means that Soldier have several cards less in hand when it comes to the Epilogue. Playing all your cards in the Epilogue is not so hard (the pictures are very open for interpretation), so it boils down to who has more cards - and it's usually Spring.

Of course that can change when using powers, skills and objectives, but right now I am talking about the base game. Can anyone point out any mistakes I'm making here?

If I'm right, the obvious solution would be to discard a card for movement for EVERY 2 FULL moves (ie. no cards for 1 move, 1 card for 2-3 moves, 2 cards for 4-5 moves, etc.). Any other suggestions?

This is only true for the 2 Setup Quests.

During the game you will know in which locations are your opponent's characters: so you need to pay attention where to generate a new Quest.

If you generate the Quest in a good place, your opponents will discard a lot of cards: and this is the same for Spring and Winter.

This is part of the mechanics itself, and a tactical part of the game!

Oh, and another thing: I think you are ready to play the game with modules!!

Hi, Zabbry explained well.

But, we have found a translation mistake on the English Rules. In the Italian version is ok. The Setup Quests must be placed inverted per factions.

It should be intended as follow.

Setup page 9:

7. Take the 4 Quest counters for Spring and select one at
random. The youngest Winter Player decides in which
Location to place it (see Quests, page 13). If present, the
Writer places the Quest counter.
8. Take the 4 Quest counters for Winter and select one
at random. The youngest Spring Player decides where
to place it (see Quests, page 13). If present, the Writer
places the Quest counter.

Yes, that does change things a bit - at least for the one starting quest for Spring.
