BUT MY DREAMS THEY AREN'T AS EMPTY

I would like the ability to remove the Supporter badge from my avatar. I know I donated and that is enough. I don't want to put pressure on non-donators or make them feel inferior in any way. I don't want to donate anonymously as I would like to disable ads. So how now, brown cow?

The adblock function is tied to the supporter badge. There isn't a way to have adblock without it.

That said, I feel the badges are ubiquitous enough that your individual badge wouldn't make people feel differently, nor do I think that people without supporter badges do feel inferior or pressured by them in general (nor should they).

(I realise you're having fun but let's reflect a little)

Nah, respectfully, it's not.

And that's why on BGG - No user has to pay to use the site and everyone is treated equally.

If you contribute you get a wee thank you - whether one's contribution is monetary or content or both is up to the user.

No one should ever feel that they need to contribute monetarily to fit in - some of the most popular and biggest BGG supporters just contribute content.

Bottom line neither is required but both make the site better - take what you wish and give back when you can.

It is this ethos of community, sharing and reciprocity that keep people donating their time and money and keep the site going.

Create a separate account that you only use for making donations.

And how would BGG get its ad revenue in that case? Although I suppose if I disabled them I wouldn't see them in the first place.

But the main reason I want ads disabled is that I'm constantly on on a mobile device--less ads means less data traffic and faster loading.

So perhaps you have to be a patron before this option exists?

Anyone got a sock puppet non-patron account they can check?

That would require me to spend $240 a year when I could just do the same for $25.

Please, I'm not asking for ridiculous work-around scenarios. They are not helpful and are not worth the effort. I am simply wondering if it was a possible function included in the site.

Thank you to Octavian and Monkeyhandz for clarifying that they are not. I was hoping that it would be a simple checkbox to tick, like the "Customize ads" area, where you could just tick off "Hide my Supporter badge".

I don't think it would be especially difficult to program considering that an avatar calls for so many different microbadges to display anyway, but I am not a coder and even if I were, I do not know how BGG's back end runs.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that ad block can also be purchased for GeekGold (which is what I think Bob is suggesting here). If you have enough geekgold then you can support the site through an alternate account and purchase the ad block with geekgold.

With the 1 per dollar of support and the end year bonus geekgold (which should be over 150gg) you are most of the way there.

One could also simply donate money "anonymously" to BGG, i.e. via paypal or check without mentioning one's BGG user name, if one didn't want a patron badge.

But the OP's issue is that he wants to support while still getting the adblock perk.

Of course you could just do that and download an adblock plugin so it doesn't seem like much of a problem.

That is tricky. I know as someone who has not been able to afford to support (I'm going to try to this year, but no promises), I never feel bad about not contributing, but seeing the ads is a constant reminder.

As far as a solution, I would maybe just use an ad-blocking program, knowing that you paid your money, so you're not doing anything wrong, ethically.

Of course, Sad Meeple doesn't know that.

To Sum up what others have said:
The easiest solution is to have two accounts.
One to support the site and the other to use everyday.
Transfer the GG from the supporting account to the everyday account.
Spend the Gold in the everyday account to switch on add block - 20GG per 30 days.
Give me a shout if you are short for a full years ad block.

Hello OP, you can pay 25GG to have ads disabled. You can then contribute up to $14.99 safely.

Being a member of this site since 2002, you can see by my "pledge badges" that I have not been able to donate every year... I never "felt inferior" when I was not able to donate. Since people who do donate don't really get anything extra, I don't see why anyone would feel that way.

Still, it is nice of you to think of others...
