I've recently obtained a copy of Escape: The Curse of the Temple
and I really enjoy it. I recently moved and most of my friends I see regularly are not gamers but I am trying to change that.

They enjoyed Escape and Safranito but when I've given them the option or shown them another game that I thought they might like it gets shot down or they glaze over at a lot of rules and don't even give it a chance.

I think cooperative games are my best bet to introduce them to more complicated games since they are not the most competative people. Even though they are not gamers they do enjoy sci-fi/ fantasy themes.

Please someone give me a suggestion!

Forbidden Island for something simple, easy to introduce.

Space Alert might work?

Sentinels of the Multiverse. It has really easy to teach rules, is full co-op, and challenges the players to come up with solutions on the fly, which works on the critical thinking you want to hook them on

I think this is the perfect game for my situation although Pandemic and Space Alert are strong possibilities as well.

Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game is basically an Indiana Jones style adventure. You play on a world map against either gangsters or Nazis. This is definitely one of the most component-heavy co-op games (lots of cards and pieces) and the rulebook is fairly long (I don't have it in front of me, but I think it's close to 40 pages). You can play co-op, competitive or solo. Even if you hate the game, you can set it up and stare at it in awe. It even comes with a cd of "adventure movie" music that you can listen to while you're playing.

I've tried Space Hulk: Death Angel and was not a fan at all, is the Gears of War game any good ? I think a solid 'video game' theme would do really well with my group of friends

Gears of War is the same designer as Death Angel. While the games are very different, typically people who like one enjoy the other. I would imagine the inverse is true so you probably won't enjoy it. It also is a bit rules heavy.

Ones I have and have played:

Zombicide.
Flash Point: Fire Rescue.

One I have (and is a co-op according to the blurb on the box) but haven't played yet:

Shadowrift. (and, thank you again triple-S! )

One I neither have, nor have played, but am definitely going to buy, based on what I've seen of it:

Pandemic.

Pandemic and Elder Sign are great.

I bought Pandemic and i've tried it with several different groups of friends and they all loved it. Its very easy to learn. Rules are simple. Only downside, is that you can only play with a max of 4 players...unless you buy the expansion On the Brink. Was my first co-op game and was a great choice. Even when we lost, people wanted to play again. Replay value is huge.

Elder Sign is another good one. Great for HP Lovecraft fans. A lot of dice rolling in this one. It can be played solo too. Lots of replay value and great for any game night.

I've never played it, but Space Cadets looks like it could be a lot of fun in a similar way to Escape: The Curse of the Temple. Racing against the clock while trying to work together. Also, Space Alert is similar and has a proven track record.

If any of them are fans of the source material, then Lord of the Rings might be a good choice.
