This came up last night and we sort of just ruled it on the spot in the favor of the Corp, as I was up 6-0, though I think the ruling was incorrect.

Run at data fort. Get through ice. Opponent rezzes Z Loyalty and pays an additional credit to prevent me from exposing the installed card in the fort. I would argue that since it's an access, that Loyalty doesn't work (Would function against Infiltration or Lemuria Codecracker, however).

So the question is: can it prevent me from seeing the card I access, or only when using an expose effect outside of a run?

Access and Expose are two different keywords. You cannot use Z Loyalty to block accessing of a card.

Access does not equal Expose.

Zaibatsu Loyalty currently only protects against exposure due to these cards:
Infiltration
Lemuria Code Cracker

The general advice I would offer for these situations is avoid using natural language as an arguing point. If a word is found in the glossary of a rulebook, it is meant to have a succinct meaning and you're best off dissociating it with the word's natural language definition. Otherwise you can fall into the trap of applying synonyms and such in way that leads to incorrect rule application.

Access and Expose are both terms found in glossary of the rulebook. The English language would lead you to believe that both these roughly translate to "look at" and as such be substitutable. This interpretation, however, would be incorrect and can lead to the type of confusion you ran into. If you stick to my above advice, it makes finding the correct ruling much easier.

compare zaibatsu loyalty to Red herrings and youll see that if ZL stopped accessing, it would be way way way too good for that price.
