When I asked her for more details we agreed that we're looking for a simple combat game with dice. Minis would be a bonus. She enjoys Heroscape, and we both regret they didn't make more Marvel characters for it.

Defenders of the Realm - However, the combat is against enemies controlled by the game as opposed to combat against a live opponent.

Claustrophobia , simple enough easily to play with a 10 year old but deep enough for the gamer and very beautiful . My daughter likes to go the demon.

Monsterpocalypse 2 player battle box. Comes with basic and advanced rules like Heroscape, and great minis. All you need is in the box, no need for collecting, but you can add more units if you like.

King of Tokyo popped into my head and I don't own it, have never played it, and am not sure if I would enjoy it. People end up recommending it in this situation though. I'm surprised to not see it mentioned yet.

You said comic book characters or something too eh? I've also heard of that #1 game on the hotness list Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game. I won't be getting it. I'm not into the theme.

In addition to the already-mentioned choices, consider:

Gears of War: The Board Game
Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
Super Dungeon Explore
Wiz-War (eighth edition)

Summoner Wars unless you think no minis is a deal killer. Claustrophobia is good, but awfully dark. "These are murderers who have been sent to fight demons rather than being executed...no no, those are the *good* guys."

My 10 year old and I play a lot of Summoner Wars. I would say it's our favorite game to play together. It's very simple, we never have to do any rules lookups.

My 8 year old and I like playing Battleball. It's got a lot of randomness too it, but I think that's part of what makes it fun for us.

You sir, are looking for Nexus Ops.

Simple dice combat system with a few terrain modifications that are easy to remember and they have refrence sheets. Roll a die if you get above 4 or 3 kill 1 thing. So easy.

The rest of the game is also not very complicated or deep the combat is the main attraction.

Ive never played this game, but it looks like this gentleman found the exact game the OP is looking for.
