In general, I like to be able to set up games differently in order to add variety to games. This can be problematic in DSQ because a totally random set up can produce game breaking situations.

Like if at start each player were to pull out one piece of their chosing, and place where they like you can create unequal situations. Where say, a lion lands among a tiger/wolf and he eats one and then he reaches the den with little defense. Game over in a few moves.

So far what I come up with is. At start one player can choose any piece and place it where he likes on the first 3 ranks. The other player then takes his corresponding piece and places it in the same manner, anywhere on first three ranks. The second player then chooses a piece and repeats the process. So the players take turns choosing which piece to place.

In addition, you cant place a piece so that it can capture in one move. this is typical of cats that are placed beside the lakes. They can leap and capture in one move so they cant be placed like that.

So far this seems to be the best way to create a random set up, that doesnt result in random game breaking set ups.
