I recently acquired a Lytro - which is pretty cool. Sadly, I can't figure out how to imbed the images into a forum post.

Lytro gives the following HTML (and hopefully the forum here won't munch it):

The site can also give direct links to the page with the image on it:

http://pictures.lytro.com/Gamethyme/pictures/471735

Is there a way to actually imbed the image into a forum post that I'm just not seeing?

Is this something that might be implemented in the future?

In Flickr, there's a way to get a URL that ends in .jpg. I'm testing out the share buttons for your picture, but I don't see anything with a .jpg.

Their website disables the ability to get at the image's URL via right-click.

However, I looked in the page source for it and here it is:

It's because it's not a .jpg. It's a "living picture" and is unique to the Lytro.

That's the preview image, and doesn't have the "living" ability to refocus like the full image does.

Lytro is not just another camera. It takes images using what is called Light Field Imaging. This allows a user to click on a spot in the picture, causing the image to be re-focused after-the fact. It's pretty freaking amazing.

My bet is that there is some level of server-side processing that must take place for these images to work that way, and BGG may not be up to hosting them. I would love to see support for embedding them, however, so that the Lytro.com servers can do the heavy lifting.

How big are the lytro image files, BTW?

Ah so the real questions are:
What filetype are these images really?
How do we get a clean link to that file?
and
How long until my webbrowser of choice (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE, Opera...) handles it natively?

Once those are answered, BGG can make the minor change to the [ img ] tag so that it works.

In order to post Lytro pictures on another site, you have to use iframes, per their support site: http://support.lytro.com/entries/21113556-embedding-lytro-li...

I looked over some of the support docs and discovered something I hadn't seen before: you can click-drag in one of the pictures and shift the perspective. Double click to zoom.

A good question. I wish I had an answer - when I plug the Lytro itself into the computer, I can't see the files on the Lytro. And I can't find where they are saved on my computer post-transfer, either.

And the transfer is really slow.

I should probably look at available space before and after transferring a pic sometime.

I do know that when I export the Lytro pics to .jpg they are roughly equivalent to a 5 MP camera's pics (so relatively small).

So there's no way to tweak the provided sharing HTML for the BGG forums, then?

The click/drag for perspective shift is new as of the fourth, and you need to individually process the images to enable it. When they added that, they also added filters, which are a lot like the effects filters people used to use on Photoshop when working on their Geocities pages ...

While I can respect a company wanting to protect proprietary info and tech that gives them a leg up against competitors, but I'm not a fan of cloud computing. I think this camera and the tech behind it are interesting, but it's just too much of a novelty to me. ymmv

I investigated the page a bit. The image is actually a bunch of .jpgs focused at different lengths in the background (sorry for bad terminology. I'm a programmer, not a photographer!), and it looks like it just swaps between the images based on where you mouse over in the picture.

From a quick test, it doesn't seem like their CDN prevents hotlinking, so I should be able to embed the images... Let me know if these don't show up. Here are two examples.

Focus foreground:

Focus background:

Bottom line is, the only way to embed this is with an iframe, and that's something that no forum is going to allow without restrictions. It would hypothetically be possible for them to build in a plugin specifically for Lytro, much like they have for YouTube and Vimeo, though.
