This game can handle 2-6 players - what would you say is the ideal number for playing this game? Is it best with just two?

If you want just a friendly game trying to figure out the mystery then a 2-3 player game can be a relaxing way to spend the evening.

But in order to make the Scotland Yard badges and keys work and to give the game a sense of urgency (the chase is on!), it really doesn't get the competitive feel until 4 or more players are involved. I have found 6 players can bog it down as there will inevitably be a pile-up at the museum or pub on the first few turns.

When there's a small group of people it's almost impossible to use the badges with a great degree of sucess as another player can either use the alernate door (for two exit locations), already has a key, and or can just ignore it and still win the game by bypassing that clue. In a multiplayer game when you have 4 or 5 badges out there and you've already had to use your first key, you're faced with the choice of wasting time to go get another key or if you have a key which of the badges you're going to risk using your key on.
