It seems like games with big rulebooks are becoming anathema in contemporary gaming, as if requiring people to read a lot is a sign of a boring game. I disagree. Perhaps it's because I'm a fan of bigger, monster games (not surprising, since I did my Master's thesis on classical epic poetry), but I don't think big rulebooks are detrimental to enjoying a game. Sometimes, a greater deal of complexity adds to the fun, especially the fun in learning and exploring the historical aspects of the simulation. What are some of your favorite games that were big fun to play with (not despite) big rulebooks?

As long as the rules are clear and concise it doesn't really matter to me how long they are.

Bill, you leave me no choice:

Two rule books, massive numbers of charts, and pasta rules!

I agree. The aura today of "the need to streamline rules" doesn't appeal, especially since it often floods the industry with watered-down games lacking in replay value. But since I prefer conflict simulation games, that affects my view, of course.

When I was younger with more freetime than money I would have no hesitation at diving into a big rule book game. Unfortunately I could rarely afford the game. Now the opposite is true.

I admit I passed on buying The War: Europe 1939-1945 today because I was daunted by the scale of the rulebook and the amount counters.

Some rulebooks are a joy to digest though arent they? Recently I have been delighted reading Red Winter: The Soviet Attack at Tolvajärvi, Finland – 8-12 December 1939 and Pax Romana.

Right now 1914: Twilight in the East is looking me square in the eye and asking if I am man enough to even start.

It may be beefy, but you only have to read a few pages to get all the rules.

Not that many! Or that hard from my reading. It is confusing to read across it and GBII which supercedes CB.
Phase Line Smash is one that daunts me, and anything with tiny 8pt fonts like WWIII ugh.

I submit Air War: Modern Tactical Air Combat for big rulebook. Not so sure about the big fun.

SFBs rulebook is very nicely organized. For all its length, it is an easy read. Fun game, too.
