We found this expansion completely unplayable.
As did everybody else.
Something we'd always liked about descent is that the keeper could play their very best game and not worry about trying to go easy on the heroes to make it a fun game. The heroes inability to turn their ship around made some battles unwinnable as monsters could hide out of reach of the ship, have to dash past it once and then summon minions over and over again until the heroes were worn down.
No offense, but that shows a poor understanding of good tactics. In your defense, one of the (many) problems was that sometimes there just weren't any good tactics available.
Some of the other threads suggest strategies to oppose this, but most require expansions that we did not have. In the end we just went back to enjoying Road to Legend.
Yes, RtL is fairly thoroughly balanced out now. There are a couple of killer combos left.
SoB does have some changes in the latest FAQ that may improve it somewhat, but probably not enough.
And one thing - both ACs are much the better, well rounded for having all the expansions.
2E is worth a try, if you don't have to invest. We found it a one player game - a competent OL has very little to do as everything is only balanced at the start, and the heroes upgrade rapidly and massively while the OL upgrades almost not at all.
