This is a short article in Dragon Magazine issue 1 by Gary Gygax.
Impressed with the Cleric and Dwarf added in an article of Strategic Review vol 2, issue 1, February 1976, Gary worked out two more.

These are for 1st ed Dungeon but should be viable for other editions.

Hobbit:
Needs 10000 gold value in prizes to win.
Moves only 4 spaces a turn.
Fights as a Hero or Elf, whichever has the higher score to beat the monster.
Finds secret doors on a 1-3.
Is immune to traps like the Dwarf.
When rolling on the PLT treat a score of 11 as a 6 or 8.
The Hobbit is armed with 6 Missiles, these are used the same as Wizard spells for attacking into a room from outside. Missiles add +2 to the attack roll and are regained just like Wizard spells at a rate of 1 per turn spent in the Start space.

Thief:
Needs 30000 gold value in prizes to win.
Moves 6 spaces a turn.
Fights as a Hero - But on all attacks which are non-sequential on the same monster the Thief performs a Backstab that adds +1 to the attack roll. If the thief attacks the same monster twice in a row, the bonuses are lost. On any attack roll of 12 the thief steals the treasure the monster was guarding and may then move up to 3 spaces as long as the space stopped at does not involve combat.
Finds secret doors on a 1-2.
When rolling on the PLT ignores all results except 2 due to Hide in Shadows.
Ignores all traps except the Slide.

I know this is an old post so hopefully someone will read this. In order for the thief to retain his backstab bonus he has to skip a turn in between fighting a monster? Something like this...

1st turn- Gets backstab
2nd turn- Don't attack the same monster
3rd turn- Gets backstab

etc...Is that how the backstab ability works?

Yes.

If you attack the same monster twice in a row, you lose the accumulated bonuses.

Updated the original post.
