Tried this out in our last game:

Zombies move up to how many Guts tokens you have.

Additional rule:
If you have 5,1,or 0 Guts then you automatically move six Zombies.

This last one I haven't perfected yet but it seems if you remove the ability to Zombies on your friends spaces, you remove a little bit of the limited strategy in the game. But at the same time, there seems to be a need to make sure that you don't push Zombies away from yourself.

Because of this I've played with the idea that one, you have to move Zombies, regardless if they are Zombies near you.
You have the ability to move Zombies away from you that are two Tiles away (your own tile plus an adjacent one)But if the only Zombies that you can move are on your tile or an adjacent tile, than you are forced to move those Zombies closer to you verses farther away. If an opponent is on your tile or an adjacent tile, you have the option of moving Zombies towards your opponent.
