I have been wondering if it is possible to nudge Amazon to reduce prices on their UK games and wonder if a few other did this too what impact we might have

- for a given product, under 'Product Details' they have a "tell us about a lower price" button, so I have been putting Amazon.de prices there

thing is, the mainstream Amazon.de prices are not actually much cheaper than UK. The DE site certainly has some real bargains that never seem to appear on the UK site though

thoughts?

Funny, I was discussing this with someone the other day. As a regular user of amazon too, they were surprised that there are price differences between the UK and Germany sites and also that it's possible to order from non-uk amazon sites at all. I managed to pick up Airlines Europe for 20 euros last month which was a great deal (although it's now up to 30 euros).

Board games look pretty consistently cheaper on amazon.de to me. Apart from the other ones listed, look at Legends of Andor at Euro 29 and compare that to the UK at over £46....

A guess would be that most of the English versions of games that Amazon UK stock are originally sourced from the US. Whereas obviously the German versions stocked at Amazon DE are sourced from Germany. This could explain the extra cost maybe?

My worry would be that if it was brought to their attention that they'd do the opposite and ban purchasing of games from Amazon.de to the UK. But that's probably me just being super pessimistic

There are a number of things at work here:-

- Most games being sold an Amazon.uk are being sold by 3rd party sellers using Amazon as a shop window. Sellers like Gameslore and IGUK both sell on Amazon and aren't going to offer cheaper prices through Amazon than they do on their own websites. Games are more expensive in the UK than in Germany due to no games being made in the UK, and therefore shipping costs are incurred. The fact that there is only one games distributor in the UK probably doesn't help either.

- As it's not Amazon selling directly all of the aggressive price matching shenanigans that Amazon gets up to is not in play.

- Amazon.de on the other hand does sell games directly, probably because the market for games in Germany is larger.

- Be careful what you wish for. I would be nervous of Amazon stepping in and selling directly as they would be likely to only carry the bigger selling lines of games. Even if we, the consumer, end up saving a few pounds when buying those games, who would we then buy the more esoteric games from, as the specialist games sellers who carry everything would have gone to the wall, as their major ticket items are now being sold by Amazon.

(edited to add a few comma's)

If Amazon did expand their line then I could see myself returning to doing something a little more lucrative than selling board games. Oh , not that it should matter but I pay tax in the UK... as do Gameslore, IGUK, Leisure Games, Eclectic, Shire etc.

The Legends of Andor example I gave involves direct sales by Amazon.uk and Amazon.de. Amazon.uk do already sell directly and as you say it is only the larger lines they stock and it is left to the smaller third party sellers to offer other items either via Amazon marketplace, ebay or direct from websites.

I think it must be down to basically a lack of wholesale competition in the UK and possibly the transportation issues. The Legends of Andor games are the same albeit one is as published by Fantasy Flight and one by Kosmos. Having said that, I'm sure that the Legends of Andor price for the FL version in the US is nothing like £46....

Also, definitely not a hot deal. Suggest moving it to "discussing retailers".

fair comment, harming local supplier isn't a good outcome for us. I guess the sort of outcome I was looking to, was more people finding great games (rather than play Monopoly et al) and then the niche suppliers getting more business not less

as a rule I see 'competition = good' but as others have said board gaming in UK is more niche than mainstream, so the dynamic is more complex. We seem to have quite a few really good niche suppliers but not much competition at distributor level

Occasionally there does seem to be a cheap game on Amazon Uk , I noticed Pantheon was down to £13.80 delivered the other day. No idea why this happens on games, from time to time.

Although personally for the bulk of my purchases I still prefer to support the smaller companies, that engage more widely in the hobby.
