Hi guys,

I love this game and want to expand my experience with an expansion (duh). Sunday I'm going to the Magic prerelease in my local game store and I'm looking to pick up an expansion. What is the best one to start with? A friend of mine has the Dunwich Horror, so that one is redundant (and I also don't really like it). Any suggestions?

If you are going for a big box expansion, I can recommend Innsmouth. Oh you will love the gate bursting and the increase in difficulty.

For the small box expansions I would recommend Lurker at the Threshold. This expansion adds relationship cards which in my opinion increase the immersion a lot. Also Lurker as a very fun Herald

Big Box : I gotta go with Innsmouth, if Dunwich is not needed.

Small Box : I'd go with either Lurker or King ... 50/50 ... well, maybe 49/51 in favour of King.

Wow, thank you Tibs!

Question - I see Insmouth Horror is currently sold out everywhere - is it worth picking it up on Ebay for $44 (instead of the $30ish you can get the expansions that aren't sold out for on miniature market, coolstuffinc, etc), or is there a re-release coming from FFG?

EDIT: nevermind, going to be re-released in Q1 2013 http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_upcoming.asp

It is actually listed as being 'On the Boat' from the 16th. That usually means in 8 weeks we will see it at retail (6 weeks shipping, 2 weeks getting the game to distributors/stores). Sp about 7 more weeks to go.

I've got the game pre-ordered with coolstuffinc.

Yeah, I'd like a big box expansion.

Are these all options?
* Dunwich Horror
* Innsmouth Horror
* Miskatonic Horror
* Kingsport Horror

Correct.

Though Miskatonic Horror is more of an expansion for the expansions rather then an expansion for the base game.

Id recommend Dunwich, It still has gates open etc... and then adds in the Dunwich horror part. As well as the injury and sanity cards.
So its not something completely different.

Innsmouth is similar to Dunwich with gates and such and adds in the stories.

Kingsport does add the epic battles which is really cool. And then adds a whole new element to the game that you didn't have before with rifts.

And then Miskatonic, as mentioned makes the others better.

My favorite is Innsmouth, hands down. I absolutely love it. I'm not a fan of kingsport, but I love the Black Goat, Lurker, and King in Yellow as well.

Currently I'm thinking either Innsmouth or Kingsport for big expansion and The King in Yellow for small expansion.

For some additional info, I'd like an expansion, if at all possible, that can be mixed with the regular game without too much hassle. Expansions that can be added and removed easily, or that can be mixed with the regular game and kept that way. With, say, generic additions to the known decks, and new decks for the expansion. If that makes sense.

Thanks to this game, I started reading Lovecraft and now already have all of his stories. Any help as to which expansion has the most Lovecraftian tied into it is much appreciated.

Go with Kingsport then. It has the encounters that are the least thematically guided of the three expansions you suggested. Plus it's the only one of those expansions that offers new AOs, Investigators, monsters, and items.

RE:
For a small expansion, I'd suggest Curse of the Dark Pharaoh over King in Yellow as a first expansion. Though King in Yellow adds a greater variety of things, this also makes it harder to seperate out later, if that's what you want. Since Curse of the Dark Pharaoh has a seperate encounter deck for its items, I also feel it's easier to "feel the impact" of the expansion, rather then just shuffling everything into the various decks and seeing what comes out.

Whatever you end up picking, enjoy!

I´ll give you my strategy for buying expansions. I am new to Arkham Horror, having invested less than a month in the base game. I really like it, but found it to drag out in time when closing and sealing certain gates. Anyway, I am actually opting to stay away from the big expansions for the moment because I really want to explore the base game/board first and also because the new boards really makes the game physically huge. I have no doubt, however, that I will buy all the available expansions eventually (probably also all the figures...oh I dread the cost).

So, I have instead ordered three of the small boxes

1. Curse of the Dark Pharaoh.
From what I have read this seems to integrate well and adds more gate cards that hopefully will balance out the frequencies. There is also a herald which increases the difficulty and a token wandering around giving special exhibit encounters. Sounds cool but it seems that the token will stay in Arkham only - so this is why I wanted this expansion.

2 & 3: bought at the same time - Lurker at the Threshold and The Black Goat of the woods.

I am such an addict. I really wanted to try the Dark Pharaoh expansion first, but when I saw these on sale I had to pick em up. The Black goat brings a lot, also gate bursts which definitely sounds cool and exiting. There is more as well, this cult thing and corruption cards. The Lurker messes with the gates - they get more difficult and even moves.

So these three expansions all adds to the base game with mechanics that hopefully wont be too diluted. AT least the gate bursts, gate movement and egyptian items should work quite well (and the heralds of course).

I did not buy the king in yellow because it seems the acts rely on being drawn from the mythos deck, and the bigger the deck the less likely the play is from moving acts.

After I have played some with these expansions I am going to buy big box expansions, probably dunwich, insmouth and kingsport in that order and miskatonic uni last as it is primarily designed to add cards from all other expansions to integrate them all. I am unsure when to buy king in yellow though.

Just throwing in my $0.02, the expansion I always play the game with is the Curse of the Dark Pharaoh. I love it!
I also recommend the King in Yellow as it adds the Herald rules to the game and since the revised Curse of the Dark Pharaoh includes a Herald, well, you can't go wrong picking both up!

I think heralds comes with almost every (if not every) expansion and the rules are included in all of them, so unless I have misunderstood something (it may very well be the case since I have not received my expansions yet), I don´t see what the King in Yellow offers in the herald department that is not covered by others. Besides you can always dl the KiY rules for free at the game website if you need some elements from them to play heralds.

Miskatonic Horror provides cards which fix the dilution problem with King in Yellow (as well as all of the other expansions).

how does this order sound?

1. Curse of the Dark Pharoah (Sm)
2. King in Yellow (Sm)
3. Black Goat of the Woods (Sm)
4. Lurker at the Threshold (Sm)
5. Dunwich Horror
6. Innsmouth Horror
7. Kingsport Horror
8. Miskatonic Horror

basically, getting the smaller sets first and then adding the larger ones - saving Miskatonic for last as the impression i'm getting is that it's sort of a meta-expansion. any strong feelings regarding this order of expansion acquisition?

further refined list:

1. Dunwich Horror
2. King in Yellow (Sm)
3. Black Goat of the Woods (Sm)
4. Innsmouth Horror
5. Lurker at the Threshold (Sm)
6. Curse of the Dark Pharoah (Sm)
7. Kingsport Horror

Your unrefined list is what I did. I did not want a bigger board and also wanted to experience the smaller expansions taking place in Arkham. Ancient whisper for instance will not move to Dunwich and encounters tied to any of the small expansions only occur in Arkham. So I did that, and I am happy with that decision. I would definitely do that again, but I also know that I am eventually going to get all expansions.
