It's that time if year again, Robbie Burns day. So, get on yer kilt, eat some haggis, and swing yer bonnie las to the sultry sound of the pipes. Today we celebrate the life and works of "The Bard" Robbie (or Rabbie) Burns, Scotland's favorite son. Feel free to share a few lines of your favorite Burns poem.

So on this important day I say to you all:

Mey ye aye keep hail an herty till ye're auld eneuch tae dee.

If you don't know much about the man here's a link to the wikipedia site about him.

Here's a nice recipe for haggis if you're feeling the need.

“There is no such uncertainty as a sure thing."

I'd like to address the haggis...*cough*

Dear mysterious meat of round
Inside you I wonder what's to be found
sawdust, dirt and fingernails I'm sure
given to an ailment only a good vomit can cure
to this there is nothing else to say
dig in, take a bite and pray,
you Scots are whacky, happy burns day...

The whole poem is brilliant.

Wee, sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie,
O, what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murd'ring pattle!

I'm truly sorry man's dominion,
Has broken nature's social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An' fellow-mortal!

I doubt na, whiles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen icker in a thrave
'S a sma' request;
I'll get a blessin wi' the lave,
An' never miss't!

Thy wee bit housie, too, in ruin!
It's silly wa's the win's are strewin!
An' naething, now, to big a new ane,
O' foggage green!
An' bleak December's winds ensuin,
Baith snell an' keen!

Thou saw the fields laid bare an' waste,
An' weary winter comin fast,
An' cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell-
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro' thy cell.

That wee bit heap o' leaves an' stibble,
Has cost thee mony a weary nibble!
Now thou's turn'd out, for a' thy trouble,
But house or hald,
To thole the winter's sleety dribble,
An' cranreuch cauld!

But, Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o' mice an 'men
Gang aft agley,
An'lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

Still thou art blest, compar'd wi' me
The present only toucheth thee:
But, Och! I backward cast my e'e.
On prospects drear!
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess an' fear!

And this was my favourite verse from "To a louse".

O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
An' ev'n devotion!

Of course we mustn't forget "Auld lang syne". I'm fairly certain we all know it.

Another one that is awfully long but worth looking up is "parcel of rogues in a nation", which I did my higher English final exam on.

Edited- I actually just checked it out and it's nowhere near as long as I remember it being but it's still worthwhile checking out, as well as the history behind it.

By candlelight I cast ma mind awa'
Tae long dark nights noo buried in the past,
For autumn's come again, and brought the dark
O' winter: I fear this will be ma last.
Och, that I cuid once more a young man be!
No fear had I of January's chill;
When I wis young I had ma woolly pants
Tae wear around ma bum and keep me well.

Ma bonny pants of Highland lambswool spun!
Wi' drawstrings pulled up tight around ma chuff;
They kept me warm from sun tae rising sun,
And kept ma wizened balls from falling off.
But, reckless fool! I frolick'd in the spring
Through prickly fields o' bonnie purple heather,
Ma undercrackies snagged upon a sprig,
And made a hole tae let in all the weather.

Young men take heed, don't underestimate
How much can hang on such a slender thread;
Ma woolly kecks unravelled in the wind
And noo I hae a chilly bum instead.
Ma shrivelled nuts in winter's icy hand
Have lost all girth, and dinnae stand a chance
O' basking in the Summer sun again;
I can but dream o' winter days with pants.

Does it sound better because you can imagine him saying it with a Scotish accent, rather than your Yankee speak?

I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

A Bard's Epitaph

Is there a whim-inspired fool,
Owre fast for thought, owre hot for rule,
Owre blate to seek, owre proud to snool,
Let him draw near;
And owre this grassy heap sing dool,
And drap a tear.

Is there a bard of rustic song,
Who, noteless, steals the crowds among,
That weekly this area throng,
O, pass not by!
But, with a frater-feeling strong,
Here, heave a sigh.

Is there a man, whose judgment clear
Can others teach the course to steer,
Yet runs, himself, life's mad career,
Wild as the wave,
Here pause-and, thro' the starting tear,
Survey this grave.

The poor inhabitant below
Was quick to learn the wise to know,
And keenly felt the friendly glow,
And softer flame;
But thoughtless follies laid him low,
And stain'd his name!

Reader, attend! whether thy soul
Soars fancy's flights beyond the pole,
Or darkling grubs this earthly hole,
In low pursuit:
Know, prudent, cautious, self-control
Is wisdom's root.
