Can’t Stop is a “Press Your Luck” style game that the whole family can play where a player rolls 4 dice, breaks them into two groups of two and either places runners on the board or advances runners on the board. If he can’t do either, his turn ends and all progress made that turn is lost. At any time he can stop and lock in his gains. Be the 1st player to capture three numbers win the game. It is a quite simple game with a simple mechanic that can be played in about 30 minutes. Can’t Stop was created by Sid Sackson, best known for the classic economic game Acquire. It only takes a min to learn, so let’s look at the game board.

Each turn the player starts with 3 ‘runners’. The player rolls 4 six sided dice and then breaks them up into two groups of two. For example, say the player rolled 3-5-5-6. The player could make spit these up to 5-5 and 3-6. You add the two dice up, so in this case the player has a 9 and a 10. The player starts on the bottom of the board and mark the bottom spot, in this case the 9 and 10 column. Then the player rolls again and breaks the dice up again. If the player rolls a number that is already a runner on the board for that turn, he or she moves it up 1 spot on the column or if he has any of the 3 runners available, he can start with those. Each roll must be able to move up one of the runner or establish a new runner. The player can roll as many times as he likes, but it he has no play, he loses all progress that turn. If he decides to stop, he takes his markers of his color and then if he starts that number again another turn, he gets to start from that point. When a player gets to the top of the column and stops, he wins that number and no one else can win that number. Win 3 numbers and the game is won.

I love Can’t Stop. It is one of, if not my favorite “filler games.” Being all about dice rolls it has a ton of luck, but for as much luck as there as many assume as I feel a lot of people play this game so poorly and I often win. I feel the majority of players are actually much too conservative when playing Can’t Stop. The horror of losing all the progress them made will have them kicking themselves. There is also strategy in what number combinations are best to avoid “crapping out” as I like to call it. In fact, I feel like Can’t Stop is what craps would be if you wanted to make it a board game instead of a casino game. You establish “points” and want to hit those points. The game lacks theme, and I am completely ok with that. In fact, the lack of theme actually appeals to me in this one. If you ask me to play Can’t Stop, I will almost never refuse. It is a 1 trick pony in terms of a game mechanic, but it does that trick very well and it very entertaining.

This is a nice quick setup and play game. Simple, fun, and still challenging. Nice review.
