I've looked at all the FAQs and Googled around, but couldn't answer this one. The description for the Rebound gene reads:
«
Amoebae that hit an obstacle or are carried against one, can bounce into the space on the opposite side of the obstacle, (assuming there is one).
»

What does this mean, exactly? I read that it means amoebae that drift or move (or are carried) onto the central "island" of the board jump over it to the square on the island's other side. Rebound thus has no effect at the board's edges.

That feels wrong (as in "too restrictive"). Can Mike Mayer (the author) or anyone else calrify this? The text obviously needs to be reworked.

Hmm. I agree that gene is worded strangely. I interpret it this way:

A = ameoba
X = wall or center obstacle
- = open space

X - -
X A -
X - -

Let's say the drift takes you west = <--------

Normally, your Ameoba would stay where it is:

X - -
X A -
X - -

With Rebound, you have the option to bounce against the wall and move away:

X - -
X - A
X - -

Here's an example with the center obstacle:

- - - -
- X - -
- A - -
- - - -

Drift is north ^

Rebound!

- - - -
- X - -
- - - -
- A - -

Now let's say you're in that "pocket" space on the board:

-- - - - - X
X X A X X

Normally, unless the drift is north, you're stuck there. But with Rebound, if the drift is south, you can bounce out:

-- - A - X
X X - X X

Freedom to live and eat more poop!

Frank has it right.

I can't recall the original wording, but it wasn't what it is now.

Trivia: Avoidance Response was Rebound's original (and more biological) name.

see: http://www.panix.com/~sos/bc/zurs.html for even more genes by me and others.
