This thread is inspired by this post: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/744152

We use some standard names for the pieces - I thought I would share our names in hopes of making placement discussions easier. If you have better names, please submit them.

They generally fall into logical groups. I will use the 1 to represent a square, and where needed a 1 to represent a blank space (since BGGs text entry can't do spaces well).

1
the '1-piece'

11
the '2-piece'

111
the 'straight 3'

1111
the 'straight 4'

11111
the 'straight 5'

----

the 'crooked 3'

the 'crooked 4'

the 'crooked 5'

----

the 'short Z'

the 'square'

the 'short T'

----

the 'U'

the 'Z'

the 'X'

the 'W'

the 'V'

111

111
the ' f '

----

1
11
11
'Utah' (I live here so it was obvious. If not, find a US map.)

1111
1111
the 'bird' (a rude US hand gesture)

1111
1111
the 'rifle'

This also shows our 'standard representation'. so
11
111
is 'Utah, flipped (always on the vertical axis) at 90 degrees'

In the math/puzzle community, there are standard names for the 12 pentominos. In the order that you list them, the names are:

I ("straight 5")
L ("crooked 5")
U
Z
T
X
W
V
F
P ("Utah")
Y ("bird")
N ("rifle")

That actually makes more sense. The straight 4 and the crooked 4 would then be the short I and short L, to continue the above convention.

The only hard part is giving up 'Utah'.
