Then again, when it comes to World in Flames, it seems par for the course.

After a solid 9 months of setting up, my DOD III / WiFFE magnetic set is done!

Each of the military counters (about 4900) had the information from their back moved to the front:

All done by hand, which took more time than I care to mention. From there, I cut each counter and affixed it to adhesive magnetic tape. After that, probably another 1000 counters (or so, I didn't keep track of them after the military ones) needed to be made for the administrative side of the business, also magnetic.

The maps still need work - I just blew up the original maps to 4'x3' so the maps would fit the counters, and then slapped them on the sheet metal backing. Toying with idea of just pulling out the original maps, but for the moment I can live with the split maps, a minor annoyance.

More pics of the final product:

Side shot of a good chunk of counters. Separating them was another pain....

UK set up for the 1936 start date

Japan set up for 1936 start date

Looks like its time to start! Wonder how you play?

Yes, well done!

After having thinking about monster-wargame-magnetic for years, the idea hadn't occurred to me. Having all the information on only one side of the counter removes all kinds of difficulties with magnetism vis-à-vis stacking and flipping.

I had a couple of boxes of counter magnets but I really don't like how they work. Recreating a whole new set of magnetic counters solves a lot of problems, but as you point out, it's a hell of a lot of work.

I assume you've seen this?

Interesting idea. You may struggle a bit with randomly selecting units at production time. Also, few people play with the heavies...if that is not an option you are using you could have saved a bit of time and effort. But overall, color me quite impressed!

Can you say "man cave"? (or is it geek cave?)

Either way I say to you "well done indeed". I'm sure we all want to come over an admire you're very impressive feat.

That was the inspiration for the project - and also the reason not to use the counter magnets.

On the random selection... that's what dice are for!

I figured if I was going to do one set, might as well bang out the rest while I'm at it. Poor logic, I know, but why listen to the voice of reason? You can see on some of the German counters a "T" or an "A" at the end - these designate the heavies for removal when not playing with them.

Thanks all for the compliments! It is a geekman cave at this point - you need to be nearsighted to play.

There are not words to describe how awesome this is. I had my own WIF set magnetized and wall mounted, but my efforts pale in comparison. My hat goes off to you, sir.
