The time has come.

I have too many unopened, or at least unplayed, games.

The list so far is:
* Santiago (have played another copy of this once)
* Fifth Avenue
* Gargon (have played a friend's copy)
* Gartenzwerge e.V.
* Java
* Mammoth Hunters
* Atlanteon
* Oltremare
* Meuterer
* Verraeter
* Attribute
* Big City
* Mamma Mia
* Gang of Four
* The Penguin Ultimatum
* Princes of Florence
* Traders of Genoa
* Union Pacific
* Through the Desert
* Adel Verpflichtet
* Maharajah
* Star Munchkin
* Cranium
* Monkeys on the Moon
* Wallenstein

25 games - and that's the ones that we've NEVER played, not including those that have been played once.

So I'm taking the Pledge.

My new year's resolution is: I will not buy any new games for ... a while. Until temptation becomes too great. Or, hopefully, until I have played some of my haul.

Who's with me?

or who wants to come over and play some of them with me?

This sounds like a fun game. We all list all of our unplayed games and pledge not to buy a new one until we've played them all at least once. If we cave in to pressure and buy a new one before playing we post here and the last one standing (or not buying) gets Geekgold or something from all of us compulsive buyers.

Are you MAAAAD??! I have some 600 games I've yet to play. I'd have to give up buying games for 10 years!!

Looking at your list, well if you've played someone else's copy, then it's a played game. Strike from the list.
Mix it up. Play a card game, then a big game.

* Through the Desert - I cannot believe you've not played this. Top of the list.
* Adel Verpflichtet - You'll knock this off in 60 minutes, no problem.
* Java - It's good, but you'll probably not like it as much as Tikal.
* Princes of Florence
* Traders of Genoa
* Union Pacific - a long 3 hours, fun enough, but you'll see Alan Moon's developoment right here.
* Wallenstein - print lots of stuff off the geek. Lots and lots.
* Fifth Avenue - I didn't enjoy
* Mammoth Hunters - easy, a weak game
* Big City - interesting idea, but more chrome than game
* Oltremare - good enough
* Atlanteon
* Maharajah

* Meuterer
* Verraeter
* Attribute
* Mamma Mia
* Gang of Four

* The Penguin Ultimatum
* Gartenzwerge e.V.
* Star Munchkin
* Cranium
* Monkeys on the Moon

There, that's about 10 sessions you're looking at. You'll be buying in February. Get to it.

I decided on such a pledge the other week before Christmas, when I found myself buying Descent just because it was in the shop and looked nice.

To give me something that I might conceivably achieve, I have set an initial limit:

I will buy no new games (actually no large inessential consumer items, but thats beyond the BGG remit) until Easter 2006. Then I'll review my position.

In the meantime I will endeavour to play the unplayed: Byzantium, Eulen Zauber, Eketorp, Conquistador, Careers, Sword of Rome, etc etc etc

Mmm Easter, that'll be about right for Nurnburg...OH NO.

In peace

Peter

There's a point here! I have about 50+ unplayed games but because most of these are heavy wargames it should take a couple of years to find an opponent (or the spare time) to play them all...

But i can promise not to buy any new games in 2006!

I have struck the games that have been played, albeit other people's copies, or games that I have played but have not yet got to the table with Melissa. Some due to lack of players, others due to who knows what meeple

* Santiago (have played another copy of this once) -- The sleeper of 2003. Sad it never took off as it's a great area control game.

* Fifth Avenue -- Not bad, but takes tons of group think to make a successful playing.

* Java -- If you love Einfach, Blokus, or other spacial games, this is one of the best. Also makes for one of the best 2 Players games.

* Mammoth Hunters -- Rather dry, not the best Alea

* Oltremare -- I like this one, a Bohnanza feel.

* Meuterer -- Both forgotten gems, meuterer has more player interactio,
* Verraeter -- while verraeter is more analytical.

* Big City -- This game has had great luck with playing with non-gamers, lots of player hosing as well.

* Mamma Mia -- Who doesn't like pie.

* Princes of Florence -- A staple. I usually get tromped playing this, but still one of the great Alea's

* Traders of Genoa -- If you like somewhat vindictive games like "I'm the Boss" this would be one for you.

* Union Pacific -- A staple in the Simplistic rail type games.

* Through the Desert -- OMG, what have you been waiting for, Knizia at his very best.

* Adel Verpflichtet -- Another Auction game with evil tendencies, excellent.

* Maharajah -- This one was too much to wrap my head around. A mis of ideas that fell flat for me.

* Cranium -- Party.

* Wallenstein -- Great mechanics, yet tend too be at the whims of luck sometimes.

My problem with saying that I won't buy any new games until I play all the games I have is that sometimes if you do not buy a game when it comes out you have to chase it on eBay and in auctions and what not.

I still can't get a new copy of Roads and Boats, Carabande and others...

Thank God El Grande is coming in 2006 and Reef Encounter finally reprinted (albeit uglier). It is safer to get a game when it comes out, no?

Well, it is a subjective thing, and I do admit that the original cover was merely ok, but I really do prefer the older artwork over the newer.

Some examples:

No! No! What has got into you people! You must keep buying boards as if you'll be able to play them tomorrow! Don't let the industry go out of business!

Games I have and have not played: Tikal and Tri-Tactics. Tikal may be played tomorrow.

Look, I'll give you my address. Just box them up and ship them here. I guarantee they will be given a good home with all the proper care and feeding. cool

*waves hand*

I agree with Drew. Please send those games to my Gaming Foster Home and I will take care of them, play them, and teach them to others.

Being my game collection is pretty small (30 now! with like 6 brand new purchases over the last month..hehe) the only game I have yet to play is Pirates of the Spanish Main. I picked up a collectors tin @ Toys R Us and punched out all the ships but haven't played it yet. My wife keeps asking and saying it was a waste of money but I love the ships! I just need more... arrrh

Man, and I thought I was bad about buying computer/console games and not playing them!

I need to modify the pledge slightly but I am also willing to take it:

My birthday is February 5th however so I reserve the right to enact the pledge AFTER that day

Unplayed games:

Doom: The Boardgame (since I own Descent I may just trade this one off)
Duel of Ages: Worldspanner
Laser Attack (bought it for nostalgia off ebay a couple weeks ago)
St. Petersburg
Torres
World of Warcraft: The Boardgame

When you consider I have probably added 30+ games to my collection this year that isn't too bad really.

This is way to wishy-washy to qualify as a resolution - It says nothing!!!

"a while"!?!?!?!

"until temptation becomes too great"?!?!??!

"hopefully"!?!?!?!

DDDD

Perhaps the right term is an "irresolution"?

My list is at sixty. At least most of those games I bought used, many at thrift stores.

Still too many though.

My pledge for 2006: I will spend $0 net on games. I must sell before I buy. I won't go negative on my net account.

You want wishy-washy? I'll make the pledge as long as I don't have to cancel anything I've preordered.

This would be pretty easy for me to do since I already have The Burning Blue, Pax Romana, and Here I Stand pre-ordered from GMT (along with others which won't arrive at all very soon), Triumph of Chaos and Napoleon at Marengo (I blame George Fagin for finally convincing me, btw) are purchased and on the way now, Commands and Colors: Ancients and Twilight Struggle hopefully already boxed up and ready to be sent, 3 Days of Gettysburg on the table (mostly unplayed). Oh, and now I have Caylus to play and my oldest son got the new Arkham Horror (we played it all night) and my 10 year old got Technowitches and Monsters Menace America...

I'm sure this will keep me going for as long as any of you guys can hold off!

For what it's worth, aside from everything ordered, I probably don't have a half dozen unplayed games. Around August or September, I actually hit net zero and (for those who don't know) it was no different. Then you think how long it's been since you haven't played one or another.

Hmm, looking through my collection it wasn't as bad as I thought. My pledge therefore is to not buy too many new games until I've gone through this list:

Big Kini
Chinatown
Il Principe
Indonesia
Mammoth Hunters
Princes of Florence, The
Taj Mahal
Tower of Babel
Traders of Genoa, The

After that lot is done, I'll also make an effort to actually get these on the table (then again, I might not bother as they might not be worth it ):

Oh, so you are not going to buy the reprint of El Grande then?

devil

My solution to the problem of so many games is to play more!

Last night, Wilderness War, Age of Napoleon, and Arkham Horror. We started around 7 PM and stopped at 7:30 this morning. The world speaks French (both sides of the Atlantic) and is safe from the monsters from beyond the gates.
