Hi I am interested in learning Go and playing it with my spouse. Neither of us have played it before. Can you recommend any books on how to learn Go starting with the basics? Thanks.

Search the forum posts within the last week or so. A very similar question was asked with good recommendations for software/books/internet links.

hth,

Hi Newzealander 1,

Your local library might have a couple of books that serve as a decent introduction to the game (mine did, just down here in London). Also, you might want to check out a couple of on-line communities for opponents and advice.

kgs.kiseido.com - live games
www.dragongoserver.net - basically play-by-e-mail, my favorite since I don't have time to sit and play live

On Kiseido's home-page you can find a link to download their client software and game-viewer (you could even play games with it), which is REALLY handy.

Two more handy links:

I have read the first four books of the Learn to Play Go series by Janice Kim. I think they're pretty good but nothing to write home about. They're certainly not intimidating.

The best discovery I made regarding beginning Go, however, has been the program IGOWIN which is available for free download. It offers play on a 9x9 board at a variety of levels (you have to work you're way up to higher levels -- and you can go backwards if you lose). They also offer a full version of the software for sale if you become more advanced.
