I get quite a few picture books for my kids (5 & 3 years old) from the local public library, which my wife and I read to them at bed time. Tonight, my wife was reading this book to them:

If you're not aware, the Octonauts are a bunch of anthropomorphic animals who live in an underwater base, explore the ocean, and deal with sea-based emergencies.

Anyway, my wife had just started reading the book (the part where the team are relaxing in their base) when she called me over to have a look at one of the pictures:

Clearly the creators include an RPG fan!

In case it's not visible in this photo, Professor Inkling is running dungeon module O1, 'Oceans & Ogres'. The tiny text underneath the image is just too hard to make out (the cover is only about an inch high in the book) but I'm going to try and find my magnifying glass to see if that helps.

Re: RPG Fans get everywhere...
It probably wasn't healthy to strain my eyes so hard, but I think the text reads something like:

lil tiny type for lil sloths(?) who look at stuff and hide in walls(?).
They really should come out and not ??? and ???.
Probably Woochi wouldn't mind if they stopped by but he
wouldn't want them to stay in his bed.

The monocle thing is really bizarre (coincidence?) and "Oceans and Ogres" totally reminds me of Elf Maids & Octopi, an OSR-type blog I read from time to time.

The monocle in these books pre-dates any mention of them on RPG Geek, but I agree, it's an odd coincidence.

We were late putting the kids to bed so we only read half of it; I'll let you know tonight (assuming they don't demand a different story).

To stray wildy off-topic for the general RPG forum, my favourite book that I've read to the girls recently is The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. I can't remember a children's book affecting me as much as this one did.

Thanks for straying - I took my girls (3 and 1) to the bookstore today and suggested The Paper Dolls to my oldest. We just read it (and loved it). She is currently making paper dolls with her mom.

Also, pleased to see that their choice of module and therefore game is clearly OSR.

Can't help wondering how this would have gone down in early 80's America when playing AD&D was the equivalent of making pacts with demons.

Come to think of it, it'd make a great drinking game - take a shot anytime someone says "Sound the Octo-Alert!" It happens a lot.

Si, i used to LOVE having people at my church tell me how evil DnD was. i'd listen for awhile. then ask them if they knew the president of our church youth group played. took them a minute till they realized that was me. always made for an awkward conversation.

Yep - my oldest daughter and I have become pretty addicted to watching this show. It's really good.
