When i purchased this game i was a bit unaware of its exact nature.
It was difficult for me to understand how GMT Games with its history in war games had anything to do with a racing game and how Reiner Knizia had anything to do with GMT.
I have Leaping Lemmings in my collection which is another light GMT game and when i played it i understood that a lot of strategy could be applied to simpler games.
On to the review then:
Formula Motor Racing is descibed as:"The quickest-playing auto racing game in existence,"
Its objective is:
The objective of the game is to maneuver your two-car team to the Constructors’ Championship, by scoring the most points during a predetermined number of races. The cars change position in relationship to each other.
Cars are maneuvered by playing cards.
Each card directly affects one or two cars—though not necessarily yours—either by moving them forward or backward in position
The component are:
12 Plastic cars (two each in six colors)
6 Team pit crew cards (one in each of the six colors)
54 Action cards
1 12-sided die
1 Folding Racetrack Section
The artwork of the cards is not top notch as you can see but the cards are made of hard paper than can last even if a player is not carefull.
The Board of this game is for nothing other but for the feeling that you are in a racetrack. You can play without the board if you wish but i personally find it useful when playing several games in a row in order to keep track of who scored what.
The Gameplay is really simple. Each player plays a card moves a car and the one behind it a specific number of places forward and hopes that at the end of the game he has more points than the other players.
There are several special cards included in the deck that allow you to send others out of the game or to the last place which means that until the end of the game things can always change.
Each person has two cars in his possetion which is quite handy if you consider that in most of my plays at least one of my cars get out of the race.
It has seen more than 20 plays over 5 sessions for my team of players
It has reached its limit there for us.
There are ways though to make it last longer. You can create season's to play where the winner is determined with all the places he has aquired over several games. Moreover there are different types of "strategies" to be used depending on the number of people playing.
I am not a big fan of racing but i find this game quite enloyable.
It can be a great filler between heavy games and it can be a nice introduction to non-players.Its rules are so easy to learn that you can explain in 5 minutes or less and if you play with people who enjoy making you pay it can be extremely fun.
