Do players who are recently deceased drop all items they are carrying at their time of death, or are all their cards sent to discard pile?

I remember the rules saying that all the items drop in that room. It is why there are tokens for items you get via cards.

Each Omen and Item card will tell you what happens. If the omen or item specificaly says "this item can not be dropped, stolen, etc" then when the player that has it dies, it is gone. If the card does not say anything about it then you use a token to represent the pile of items.

If the Omen is a physical item such as the Spear, the Book, or the Crystal Ball; they can usually be stolen.

Some of the Haunts have special rules when it comes to stealing certain Omen items if they play a key role in the Haunt.

Read each omen card. If it says "this card can not be dropped, stolen" etc (like the dog, or girl or madman) then it will not be dropped when the player dies. You can not attack them and try to steal items like this either, the cards plainly say so. If the card does not say anything, then the omen or item can be stolen and dropped as per the normal rules of the game. As mentioned above, certain haunts use omen objects that normaly can be stolen. In this case it would make it very hard if the traitor could just attack once, steal the item the survivors needed to win, and just run off. In these cases the survivor/traitor tome will say that the omen cant be stolen.

They will indeed be dropped, otherwise you will have scenarios that are nearly impossible to finish. The Mummy Walks needs the girl. What would happen if the player being custodian of the girl got killed? Suddenly the Girl would dissapear into thin air... Doesn't sound very likely.

The girl, madman, and dog are not dropped when an explorer dies. However, they will sit around in the room where the explorer they were following died and begin to follow the first explorer who enters the room. As best I can tell, the only difference between being dropped and this special case is that the dog cannot be used to retrieve them.
