This sounds like a cool idea, however testing all of the possible cards would be impossible (as it sounds like you would have tons of possible cards).

Playtesting would have to be pretty darn effective to make sure that all possible cards would be balanced.

This sounds like it would be most easily playtested on a computer.

Either way, a fractal card game would be awesome.

Even if all the costs are balanced, certain abilities just work better with other ones or certain stats a lot better. I think the randomly generated card set would be cool, and if there was some way to let both players have access to the card (so essentially "self balancing"), that would be even better.

Basically a cool idea, but .. how do you randomize abilities (and their costs?)

I'd like to see this as a computerised boardgame rather than a physical game. That way you could make the algorithm "learn" the cards values. Everytime someone picked a card for their deck it remembered it and periodically adjusted all of the cards to make the more popular ones more expensive. Canny players would change to different cards in response and over time each cards cost would come to approximately equal its worth.

There's a common feature of CCGs that I don't think you've used yet: keywords.

For example "This card is a [type A]".

"This card may not be attacked by cards of [type A]"

"This card does 1 extra damage against cards of [type A], but suffers 1 extra damage from cards of [type B]"

"This card may take an action to give cards of [type A] +2 [attribute] until the end of the turn"

and so on.

Interesting idea. Wayyyyyyyyyyy back Some former TSR staff tried this briefly with DragonElves. A card game where the players could customize their own cards within a point based system. Or rendomly generate one.

Chaotic uses a odd little random element to their cards which changes slightly how they function via a code attatched to each card.
