We had another go at this one on the weekend and it fell flat again.

We seem to be missing the point so are looking for some help with these things to start with...:

1. What is the point, what are we aiming to achieve to win - we have read it over and over and know what we have to do but can't work out how to do it (also checked BGG and the DoA website for all these)?

2. How do you get equipment, we know you start off with none but can't seem to find how you get some?

3. Say you get to the 'red eye' in a labyrinth and you beat the guardian - then what:
- do you leave
- do you stay and fight the next guardian
- what happens to the black/white marker that was marking the guardian spot...do you leave your character there as the new guardian and then move this marker?

Once you sort these out you may need to be on stand by for our next questions...blush

Hi Warren! This thread will likely get moved to the DoA page, so if it disappears you might want to look for it there. Here's some answers, hope it helps!

On page three of the rulebook, there is a yellow box called 'Winning Duel of Ages' that explains the winning conditions. Basically, you want to be the team with the most points when your pre-selected time limit runs out. For your first game I'd plan on four hours as it will take a little time to get the hang of it, but once you have the hang of it you can play a pretty good game in 2-3 hours. You get points by having more characters than the other team, or by having your guardian position marker closer to the entrance of a labyrinth than the other team.

When you squeak, pass or amaze on a guardian challenge, you may be able to get more equipment. Take a look at any guardian card - next to the results for squeak, pass, and amaze there are often little rectangles that have a number in them, usually 1 or 2. That tells you how many equipment cards to draw from the equipment deck if you get that result on the challenge.

You leave. Depending on the results of your challenge, you may be dismissed or banished. Dismissal and banishment are explained on page 7 of the rules in the yellow box on the right hand side. Basically it means you roll the die and move to a dome with that number that you just rolled. Dismissal means you roll the die and move your piece, banishement means your opponent gets to roll the die and move you.

When you win a challenge, your guardian marker is moved one space closer to the entrance - this is shown on the guardian card with the red eye symbol. The guardian card that you just defeated is placed on the bottom of that guardian deck, face up. The next player to reach that challenge will draw a new guardian from the deck. Your character does not stay there, you move to one of the domes as described above.

Hope that helps!! DoA is a really great game, I enjoy it very much although it's been forever since I've had time to play it. It DOES take a bit of figuring to work out the rule book, I'm afraid it's not as clear as it should be, but it's well worth the effort.

Some are born to move the world To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you, the blind who once could see The bell tolls for thee...

Denise did a great job of answering the questions. The only other thing that I might suggest is to download the DOA "Masters Addendum" rulebook that is located on this page (MastersGuide.zip):

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/9365

The PDF looks a little funny as it is missing some of the background graphics, but the rules are generally a little easier to follow than the original rulebook.
