"A son seul aspect n'est-on pas terrasse? Nul n'est assez hardi pour l'exciter" Job 40:28
After two plays of scenario 1 (Nightfighter # 1 and Nightfighter # 2) it was time to tackle scenario 2.
The new thing that comes with this scenario is radar search. On the other hand, compared to the variant of scenario 1 (London Blitz) there will be no searchlights.
Scenario 2 - DUNAJA
Last time I managed to tally and to attack a bomber. Unfortunately the Heinkel not only survived, it shot my Hurricane down. Let's see what will happen now.
My nightfighter. This time it is a Me110C-4.
The conditions. An initial roll for the moon phase results in a no moon. This is bad!
The first bomber enters play. Three high uncertainty counters appear on the board. My fighter closes in.
I use my Freya and test the counter on 1602.
Roll: 5 - the counter is a phantom and is removed
The Hampdens move ahead. Three additional high uncertainty counters enter the board.
Freya search - 0405: 2 - the counter is a phantom
The bombers advance.
Freya search - 0905: 5, reroll - 1! - all the other counters are removed. Here is the real bomber.
The lone Hampden flies in the dark.
I use my Freya to bring it from moderate uncertainty to low uncertainty.
Freya search - 0908: 3 - 2 (radar value) = 1. The search fails.
I try to tally the bomber. I have 3 dice (2 for moderate visibility and 1 for good view from my Messerschmitt. The chances are fair
Tally rolls: 2, 4, 4 - fail
The second bomber enters play.
Freya search - 0910: 3 - 2 (radar value) = 1. The search fails.
Tally rolls: 2, 2, 3 - fail
Freya search - 0903: 2 - the counter is removed as a phantom
Tally rolls: 2, 3, 4 - fail
Freya search - 0305: 1! - the counter proves to be the real bomber!
Tally rolls: 5, 6, 6 - there is a chance for a tally
Moderate uncertainty roll: 2/2 - failed!
I switch my attention to the leading bomber. With such slim chances of tallying the bomber while it is at moderate uncertainty, I have to use my radar to reduce it to low uncertainty.
Freya search - 0918: 1 - 2 = 0 fail
Tally rolls: 3, 3 6
Moderate uncertainty roll: 4/1 - failed!
Freya search - 0920: 5 - 2 = 3 Got it!
Shift roll: 4 - the bomber, now at low uncertainty lands on 0921
As my Messerschmitt is at a different hex there will be no tally this turn (we are under moderate visibility conditions).
The third bomber enters play.
Freya search - 0313: 1 - 2 = 0 fail
Tally rolls: 1, 2, 5 - fail
All the bombers move forward.
This will be my final occasion to tally and attack the leading Hampden.
Freya search - 0315: 6 - 2 = 4 got it! The second bomber is reduced from MU to LU.
Shift roll: 6
Tally rolls: 1, 2, 6
Low uncertainty roll: 6 - the tally attempt fails as the bomber would be switched to a hex outside the area being searched.
All the remaining bombers move forward.
My Messerschmitt turns back and barely stays on the map.
Freya search - 0408: 4 - the counter is removed as a phantom.
Freya search - 1610: 4 - the counter is removed as a phantom.
Freya search - 1013: 4 - the counter is removed as a phantom.
Taly rolls: 1, 1, 4 - fail
My last chance to shoot down the second Hampden!
Freya search - 0312: 2 - the last bomber if found!
Tally rolls: 1, 1, 4 - fail
Freya search - 0315: 5 - 1 = 4! Got it!
Shift roll: 5
As the last remaining bomber is already at low uncertainty my Freya becomes useless. With a search value of 2 it cannot reduce the counter from low uncertainty to no uncertainty.
Now all is in the hands (or rather in the eyes) of the Messerschmitt pilot.
The Me lands on the same hex as the Hampden.
Tally rolls: 2, 2, 4 - fail
Tally rolls: 3, 3, 5 - fail
Tally rolls: 4, 5, 6
LU roll: 4 - fail
Last turn and last hope!
Tally rolls: 1, 1, 3 - fail
The last Hampden exits the map.
All the three bombers safely continue their mission.
My Messerschmitt, after hours of fruitless research, returns to base.
I so desperately needed searchlights during this play! Having experienced how great they are during my previous game, this time I was having a feeling of making a step back all the time long. The Freya proved very helpful but as it cannot reduce a counter's uncertainty from Low to no uncertainty I had to rely on my tally rolls in the end. With moderate visibility that meant that after a successful tally roll I had only one chance on six to actually spot and tally the bomber.
In the end these odds proved to low.
I hope that with the combination of radars AND searchlights the game will become a lot more interesting.
