I have a very strange version of Monopoly, and I'm hoping someone here can tell me about it (when it was launched, where, and whether or not it's a rare find and valuable)

Thanks...

welcome

Not quite sure what is strange about it - anything else we should know?

John Waddington is now know as just Waddingtons they bought the licence in the 1930s and were originally based in Leeds and came up with the now well recognised UK version of the board.

Having looked through our record (Monopoly) - I'd say it's the 1972 British Version.

So it's not really that old, rare (mass produced) or desirable (due to it's plastic and not wooden houses/hotels).

A car boot price is the best you can hope for.

A slightly scrappy copy of the same version is currently at £3 on ebay;

Personally I'd just keep hold of it.

Oh perhaps it's a uniquely British thing.

Basically we don't do yard or garage sales. Carboot sales are organised events where people can set up little stalls like flea markets - only they are outside and stall holders use their car and it's boot during the process. (Very good place for buying older games, particularly GW stuff at knock down prices)

See Wikipedia Car Boot Sale

Well, that makes a bit of sense then. "Car boot" over there is a "car trunk" over here.
Around Halloween, some places (churches or schools, mostly) will have "trunk or treat", where you decorate your car and hand out candy to kiddies, to keep them from going door-to-door as there is some concern about safety in that case.
I guess in Britain, you'd have to call a similar event "boo and boot" or something.

Thanks, I really appreciate your knowledge and willingness to inform...

... although I'm disappointed in game now... I thought I stumbled on to something!

Thanks again,

Craig

Happens to us all - you've still got a 40 year old copy of Monopoly which is a fair age.

Cheers Liam
