There are many variants for playing risk with 'zombie' armies.
My focus is on the type where the zombie army is moved according to automated movement rulesets. So Even if theres just two players Neither player directly controls the zombie army. A common enemy to defeat.

Two main elements would be necessary.
A. Zombie armies do not draft. They recieve troops by successfully infecting his opponents.
B. Zombie outbreaks occur occassionaly deep within 'safe' territories far from the human-zombie combat frontlines.
C. Zombie armies are not controlled by an additional player but according to a set of movement rules.

So For those who have many friends to playtest zombie rules with (as im an old fart with few risk players nearby) What are the best zombie rules for risk that youve ever played?

This isn't really an answer, but apparently a Walking Dead version is in the works. Could be a co-op Risk variant? (fingers-crossed)

The easiest way to home brew a zombie variant is to create some automated rules.

For random zombie infections, you take the number that is double the total number of players. Then count turns. Every time you hit that number in turn sequence you roll a D100. Each country on the board would have to correspond to a number of 1 to 100. (or lower depending on which version of risk you have)

For zombies attacking/spreading outward you would use a kind of Arkham Horror method with Arrows indicateing the progress of spread. When multiple venus are open always spread to the most populated first.
You could make a print-up map for this aspect. Always make obstacles such as mountains and oceans give the populace on the other side a lower spread to value than the easy access lands right next to the origin point.

Zombies spread like an attack. If they survive an attack they have spread.
