Subject: Strongly Themed Ameritrash with Simple Rules rss

I think I know what I'm after, can you guys suggest much in this vein?

Strongly Themed - Things like pirates, space marines, street gangs, sword & sorcery, wild west shootouts, world war one dogfights etc. Not really interested in abstract games, because the theme is a lot of the fun for me.

Ameritrash - I like dice and randomness. Winning for being good at the game is not always important to me, but nice if it's there. As I understand it, this means I like ameritrash?

Simple Rules - Games that you can teach to non-gamers without their eyes glazing over. My brother tried to teach me Dreadball on friday, for instance and there was far more unnecessary complexity than I have patience for anymore...and I'm definitely what you would call a gamer.

So far, I've found the following seem to fit the bill:

Space Crusade
Talisman
Battleball

...which are sort of my replacements for Warhammer 40K, Dungeons & Dragons, and Blood Bowl, which are all too open-ended and complex for my tastes nowadays.

I'm especially interested in finding a pirate game, a zombies game, a wild west game, a street gang game (to replace Necromunda), and a dogfight game (preferably not collectable) if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks in advance... meeple

If you want to replace Dungeons & Dragons then maybe check out Descent (linked to the rules for your perusal). It has a thick rulebook but it's not actually complex game, it just has a lot of things to track at first. Once you actually play it you'll understand every element quickly with little reference.

The game was designed for a DM/Overlord vs. PC style.

For something a bit shorter:

King of Tokyo.

It's thematic plutonium.

And for something longer:

Zombicide.

Merchants & Marauders could be fun for you, but I would also second the vote for Pirate's Cove.

Claustrophobia (simple, quick, thematic)
Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie (yes, expensive, but simple and thematic)
300: The Board Game (very simple, quick)
Dinosaurs of the Lost World (simple, unique mechanics and presentation)
Dogfight (super simple, toy game with cool pieces)

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game
- Dice are used in the battles, so definitely some luck
- Lots of suspicion and, eventually, backstabbing, so although it is a tad more complex than some other games you've enjoyed, the theme and FUN surrounding the game should help/

Cyclades
- A nice intro into several mechanics (auctioning, area control, war game) while not being incredibly difficult. I have taught this toa non gamer and she loved it!
- Very cool, involved theme

King of Tokyo
- Haven't played this yet, but from the looks of it, would be PERFECT

Claustrophobia
- Love this as my go to 2 player game...basically it's Descent-lite, and with 2 player head-on-head war as opposed to coop

Good luck and happy rolling! meeple

Smash Up and King of Tokyo are simple and easy to teach, but both have some interesting decisions for you to make.

And between the two, I would go KoT first if you can get the 4-6 to play it.

Nexus Ops. Thematic enough, simple rules, and dicey. I really enjoy how aggressive this game gets.

A huge thumbs up for the Claustrophobia recommendations. Simple to teach and has some nice depth when you dig into it. Also quite brutal when played between skilled opponents.

Something from the Wings of War series for dogfights. Perhaps Wings of War: Deluxe Set?

Fortress America is quite possibly the pre-eminent ameritrash game. It's about America being attacked by 3 different nations, simultaneously.

Zombies: Zombicide (co-op) or Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game (one player plays the zombies).
